Here are Some Exercises to Increase Your Reading Comprehension

While working on increasing your reading speed and comprehension there are a few things you can do to improve your comprehension. The following article will discuss 3 of them.

Speed and Comprehension: The Benefit of Increasing Your Vocabulary

Here is the first activity to help you with your comprehension of your selected subject, you need to improve your vocabulary regarding that subject. If you don't know the definition of a particular word while reading it, the best thing to do to increase your vocabulary is IMMEDIATELY look up that word and memorize it using a funny Visual mnemonic. For example, the way I learned the word Cnidarian (the scientific name for a jellyfish) was by picturing a jellyfish sitting on my younger cousin Darian's head. Also there are flashcards you can get online, for free, that have words and definitions on them for pretty much any subject you can name, using them will improve your vocabulary and that of course improves your comprehension. Beyond all that, the simplest thing might be to just read the dictionary.

Speed and Comprehension: Stop Skimming

Skimming is the process of running your eyes over the text you're trying to read and hoping that some of it sticks, it's not a very effective way to boost speed and comprehension. In order to boost your comprehension by stopping skimming, you need to just slow down, read each word, and even try to visualize what you're reading in your head while you read it, like watching an internal movie.

Speed and Comprehension: Change Your Brainwaves

Your brain's functioning can be measured in varying states of biological arousal according to its activity levels; these are the brainwave states Alpha, Beta, Delta etc. When these states are altered so as to increase focus and attention, such as in Alpha, reading speed and comprehension are increased. Typically when awake our minds are in Beta state, thinking about what's going on right now, perhaps planning dinner or whatever is going to happen in the near future. For many parts of your life this is wonderful, but not when you are trying to understand something you are reading. If you want to have a real impact on improving your comprehension you need to be able to have your brain reach the Alpha state. One way to accomplish this is to sit quietly, close your eyes and take slow deep breaths. Many eastern monks will meditate like this on a sound like saying "oooooohmmmm" in order to reach and stay in Alpha. Once you feel as though you're in a light trance state, then start reading. While in this state, studies have shown that you can triple your reading speed and your comprehension. For those who don't want to meditate or practice getting into Alpha by feeling it, you can always get an EEG machine to monitor your brainwaves in real-time so you'll know when you're in Alpha. There is also a device called a trans-dermal electro-brain stimulator, it clips to each ear and sends weak electrical signals to your brain that tricks it into an Alpha state. Lastly, using stereo headphones that are playing mp3s or CDs that have tracks called binaural beats recorded on them will lull your brain into an Alpha state. Watch your comprehension soar when you give these ideas a try!
