Tame Your Time-Wasters to Boost Your Productivity

If you work for yourself, and especially if you work from home, you are probably inundated with time-wasters and distractions. While it may seem like checking Facebook throughout the day or reading your email all the time may seem like it's only robbing you of a few minutes here and there, it's likely that you're more distracted then you might think. And, even if you are wasting just a few minutes a day, added up weekly, monthly, or annually, that can be a lot of your time. And lost time equals lost revenue. This is why it's critical that you reduce your distractions. Notice that I didn't say remove - in many cases, it's not always possible to completely remove your distractions - but we can get them under control. Here's how

Prioritize. Without deciding what your priorities and goals are, it can be tricky how to spend your time, and frequently you may end up spending your time on whatever the bright shiny object of the day is - which typically is not what will help propel your business forward. Make sure to set some clear goals around your business, and each evening, spend a few minutes planning out what your key priorities and tasks are for the following day. When distractions pop up, you can then revisit your list of priorities and see if the distractions are in service of, or are working against, the goals you've laid out for yourself

Let tech help - not hurt. We are inundated with things that "ping" us - our phone vibrating to let us know about a new text message, a pop-up on our screen that says email is waiting for us (when isn't it?), and our social media stream alerting us to a new friend request. Don't get me wrong - connecting with other people is great, and for many of us, these forms of communication are an essential part of how we do business. That said, we typically don't need to monitor them - or have them interrupt us - all the time. These communication streams may seem urgent and immediate, but upon closer inspection, they are very seldom critically important to your bigger goals in the moment in which you receive them. Rather, it's much better if you choose a few times a day to process your various inboxes, and then switch gears to tasks that you've given priority to.

Home is not work. If you work from home, sometimes it's a little too easy to fall into a rut of low productivity. You can get distracted by the dishes in the sink, or the laundry piling up in the corner - things which you typically may not otherwise be motivated to do, except for the fact that you have a big project that you need to start, and suddenly those chores seem of paramount importance. It's absolutely essential that you create some boundaries between your work life and your home life so you can reduce these distractions. Remove all distractions from your line-of-sight while you're at your desk (yes, that means the TV too!), let your friends and family know what your work hours are, and discourage them from contacting you during those times unless they need you urgently. Bonus points: get dressed for work, as if you might be called to leave for an important client meeting at any moment. You'll instantly start taking yourself, and your day, more seriously.

Again, it will not be easy. This will require you to use up a good lot of your brain power - but it will certainly be worth it. DON'T ever make the mistake of ignoring the problem, or not tackling it face to face. If you do this, you will merely be postponing its solution, and remember, the longer you procrastinate on this, the longer it will lurk in the back of your mind.

Move on! Perhaps the best thing to do when unhappy is to get up and make a go on life. Why let those little things affect your inner happiness and peace? When you let sadness overcome you, you give it power over your entire being. Move on!, Do the things that make you feel great… Write, watch a movie, travel - whatever it is, leave unhappiness behind to eat its own dust.

Surround yourself with people who will make you happier. The worse thing you can do when feeling lonely is to surround yourself with people who are even more unhappy than you are. For sure, you will be feeding off each other's negativity and loneliness. Instead, look for friends who are in the midst of so much happiness that you have no choice but to be just as happy. Feed off their infectious laughter and zest for life. This way, you'll understand how much better it feels to fill your life with joy than tears.

Be grateful for whatever you have. Understand that you still have more than others. Stop feeling bad about not being able to buy your favourite pair of shoes. Instead, think of those who don't have feet. It's all a matter of perspective. When you keep on comparing yourself to others, you will never be truly happy. Try spreading your blessings around - that always leaves a really happy feeling inside your heart.

10 Steps You Can Take When Your Anger Button Is Pushed

Some days you may feel like you are walking around wearing a sign that must say, "Push My Anger Button".

This person, and in some cases more than one person, or even this article may turn your calm into a storm.

You were just fine until someone said _______ or did _________, that to you. Then wham, bam, pow, wow, you became all fired up.

Sometimes your anger/frustration comes flying out at the person without any notice at all.

You might find yourself venting your feelings to another person or other people about what this person did to you or how this person got you all riled up.

Or, maybe you swallow your feelings, so to speak, and you are stewing away for days to come, and you are cool, standoffish, or snippy with the person or even people who have nothing to do with what happened.

Perhaps you try fooling yourself by pretending you aren't angry at all. It's like if you were to sweep it under the carpet it's not really there. Believe me, it's still there!

Lashing out might feel good at the time as you have released some of that energy, but it's not the best way to convey what's upsetting you. In fact, it can often make things worse.

Venting to someone is helpful in that it allows you to share what you are feeling, but it doesn't necessarily take it away.

Stewing about it only adds fuel to the fire and creates more angst.

Denying your anger only postpones it and adds to what is already there.

Whether you lash out, vent, internalize, or deny what's going on, it's important you realize that your anger button has been pushed and that YOU CAN gain some really valuable insights about yourself and often about the other person as well.

Before you arrive at that space of learning from what's being triggered, it helps to calm down and center yourself.

There are many ways that you can settle down. You can go for a walk, take some deep relaxing breaths, listen to some relaxing music, exercise, have a bath, etc.

Once you are feeling a little less angry it's time to take out the pen and paper.

Ask yourself, "What am I REALLY angry about?". Often what you think you are angry about isn't really what it is at all. There also may be more than one thing that has upset you.

Become as clear as you can as to what angered you the most.

Write down all the words that surface when you think about the person/situation - unfair, doesn't listen, dosen't understand, never helps, is selfish, etc.

Take a few deep breaths and look at the situation/person again.

See if you can see a time where you have shared that trait in your thinking or way of doing things, whether in the past or currently.

Find an instance of how the opposite of what you are saying is true. For example: __________ is really selfish. I'm sure you can think of many ways the person is selfish. Are you able to see where you have been or are selfish in you life? Then find an example of where you and the other person are not selfish.

Write down some positives about you, the other person, or the situation.

Check in to see if your anger has lessened, even a smidgen.

What have you learned about yourself, the other person, or the situation?

Is there anything you could do or say differently now or if something like this occurs again?

You may find yourself still wanting to hold onto your anger. If so, ask yourself how long you want to hold this feeling. How is it helping you, the other person, and/or the situation?

You can repeat the 10 steps more than once if you feel you want to keep that anger button pushed in.

You really can learn a lot about yourself and others if you take the time to get to know what you are feeling.

Experiencing anger, or any other emotion for that matter, isn't a bad thing. Rather, these emotions are truly opportunities to understand ourselves better and to learn and grow from them, if you choose.

You never know what new thinking, new ways of doing things, and new possibilities can arise from having your anger button pushed.

The next time that button in you is triggered you may look choose to look at it differently.

You may not always be victorious in handling your anger and that's alright. What's important for you is what you are learning from those times as they are steps in this great journey we embark on called life.

What creates, or is creating, a negative attitude in your life? Perhaps you are worried, concerned, or frustrated about your financial situation, your child, your relationship, your health or someone else's.

Maybe you are doubtful about your present or future circumstances, or angry or upset with someone or about something.

No matter what or whom is stirring up these unwanted and often uncomfortable feelings, you can release them by surrendering to them and shifting your negative attitude back into a space of gratitude.

Often when people hear the word "surrender" they think it refers to giving up or giving in, and in a sense you are, but not in the way you think.

What you are doing is giving up the need to hold onto the false beliefs and unhelpful ways of thinking that are temporarily blocking the positive outlooks and outcomes.

When you yield to what's happening instead of fighting against it, or being emotionally and/or physically debilitated by it, you are really saying, "Show me the way because right now I can't see it".

When you surrender, sometimes the ease and answers are immediate; other times it can be a bit of a wait and calls for patience and faith.

Trusting and trying to remain positive when you don't know what's happening or how things will turn out can be sometimes be scary.

That's why when you surrender to "what is", the non-constructive thoughts, and perhaps undesirable circumstances, open to a space of genuine gratitude within you.

You may already be thankful in your life but there is nothing like a little emotional or physical upheaval to really open your eyes and heart to all the goodness still surrounding you in this very moment.

As difficult as it may be to see what there still is to be thankful for, they're there.

Maybe it's your family and friends, or your pet(s), or the money you do have, or the quiet moments, or the sun shining, or the gentle rain.

Perhaps you received a phone call offering you support or an unexpected gift, or an opportunity presents itself that wasn't there before but now is.

When you give in, or give up, it doesn't mean on hope. You are releasing that which you don't know, accept or understand, and allowing yourself to be in gratitude just the same.

You are letting go of the "what ifs" and surrendering to "what is" - what is present and pleasant right now.

Make a list of all the "what ifs" you are questioning in your life.

For example, what if I lose my job or spouse, what if I, or someone else, doesn't get better, what if I can't pay the bills, what if I get in an accident, what if I lose control, etc.

Then write down whatever thoughts come to mind after you state "what if"…

Allow whatever negative thoughts and feelings to surface and then surrender to "what is".

Ask yourself, even in the worst case scenario, what can I be grateful for in this very moment.

At first you may find yourself stating the word, "nothing".

Continue to ask until something surfaces; it will. Don't force an answer. Rather allow it to unfold before and/or within you.

If you continue to do this this exercise you will find yourself sooner, than later, looking toward the positive and possibilities, rather than the negatives.

Whether you or someone you know is in emotional and/or physical pain, let go. When you do, you are allowing God (whatever you understand this to be) to soften what is, or what is becoming hardened or negative within you and reunite you through gratitude.
