Chose friends who will encourage you to be your best, and not those who will inject your mind with all sorts of negative thoughts, and pull your self-esteem to unfathomable depths. Friends are meant to make life more beautiful - and not hell, the way most people want it to be. How else will you get your perfect life?

Help others whenever you can. Always remember this - you will always get back what you put in. Do good, and you will be rewarded. Be deaf to the needs of others - or worse - do others evil, then you will welcome evil into your life as well. Karma.

You know the unexplainable happiness and giddy feeling you get after helping someone out? That's the kind of stuff that helps you achieve a perfect life.

Focus only on the positive. Of course, without pain, you won't appreciate comfort. Without failure you won't pursue success. Without unhappiness, you won't know what joy is. For every negative thing, there is a silver lining. Failure teaches us to be resilient. Pain teaches us to be strong. But to create a perfect life, you must keep your eye on the positive, because this is what will make the entire journey worthwhile.

Remember that you cannot be anyone else but you. No matter how much you imitate others, you can never be them. No matter how much you pattern your life after someone else's, it's still your life. Stop thinking that being someone else is better for you - because you never will be someone else. You are unique, so appreciate your individuality. Stop wishing for a life you don't have.

If you keep thinking that you can do it, then you will be. Night Clubs Raves and Club Drugs Form Assault on Safety of Young People Across the Country

Night clubs and raves are specifically designed to work hand in hand with popular club drugs but abuse of these drugs can be addictive, harmful or even fatal.

Night clubs and raves have become very big business in major cities and college towns across the US. Whereas raves used to be staged in empty warehouses or fields, now they may take up entire stadiums like the Los Angeles Coliseum. And nightclubs are increasingly designed to complement the effects of popular drugs used in these clubs.

The most popular club drug in the US is Ecstasy, about which the Drug Enforcement Administration says: "MDMA causes changes in perception, including euphoria and increased sensitivity to touch, energy, sensual and sexual arousal, need to be touched, and need for stimulation."

Playing to these effects, shows at both raves and nightclubs feature thundering music and scantily clad women performing dance routines, Walls in a nightclub may be made of suede for tactical pleasure. Light shows cater to the changes in perception some of these drugs cause and light sticks may be handed out to the audience to keep the effect going.

At large rave venues, prominent booths offering cold water at premium prices compensate for the overheating effect that accompanies any formulas that contain stimulants, such as Ecstasy or methamphetamine. Dance clubs may have chilling rooms or zones where patrons can lower their temperatures. Smoke and fireworks are common additions to the shows.

"One could think the designers of these clubs are just designing interesting venues for their shows until you compare the features against the effects of drugs," stated Erica Catton, Director of Admissions at Narconon Arrowhead, a non-profit drug rehabilitation center in Oklahoma. "These venues fully anticipate club drugs being sold and used every one of these venues. In fact, one rave promoter told me that the only reason he set up and promoted raves was to make money off the illicit drugs sales. This is not a safe area in which to be naïve."

Common Club Drugs and Their Effects

MDMA also known as Ecstasy is a stimulant similar to an amphetamine that creates a sense of euphoria and desire to be touched or sexually aroused. It also changes perceptions of time, space and light. But many pills sold as Ecstasy may actually contain methamphetamine, ketamine, cocaine, caffeine or similar drugs that may only recently have been formulated.

Due to the tendency of the drug to create overheating, when people take Ecstasy and dance the night away without getting enough water or chilling down, they can and do suffer organ breakdown and death.

Piperazines: These are a fairly new addition to the club drug roster. These are similar drugs to Ecstasy, but can create a more intense effect. In this class are TFMPP, referred to as "Molly" and Benzylpiperazine, frequently called BZP. New drugs in this class that show up on the streets frequently, especially in the UK, faster than law enforcement can outlaw them. Just by changing the formula slightly, chemists can create a "new" drug that circumvents the law but still creates problems for some users.

BZP acts like an amphetamine, decreasing appetite and increasing blood pressure and heart rate. Like amphetamines, the person who takes these drugs can end up delusional or paranoid. As well as addicted.

GHB: This is the drug that many people refer to as "Grievous Bodily Harm." It can depress the central nervous system, reducing anxiety and causing euphoria. But it can also cause serious confusion, hallucinations and mental impairment. Together with alcohol, the user risks unconsciousness or coma. And most people mix club drugs with other substances. GHB is often used as a date-rape drug.

Ketamine: This animal anesthetic causes feelings of dissociation and distortions of sight and sound. An overdose of ketamine can cause hallucinations, delirium and amnesia.

Rohypnol: This drug, illegal to manufacture or prescribe in the US, is sold in other countries as an anti-anxiety drug. It is sold across the counter in Mexico, leading many people to buy the drug there, then smuggle it into the US. This drug too is used as a date rape drug. Men may add it to a woman's drink without her knowledge and then take her out of the club to have sex with her. She may not be able to resist the assault and may not remember it the next day. Rohypnol causes sedation and if taken with alcohol or opiates, can suppress the breathing reflex to the point of death. This drug is illegal in the US but is sold across the counter in Mexico.

Addictiveness of Drugs Keeps Some People Using them Despite Harm

One might think that a single bad experience with one of these drugs or seeing someone else have a bad time using these drugs would cause a person to stop using them. But these drugs are all addictive and may quickly cause severe cravings and withdrawal symptoms.

"Some people don't stop using them after they have seen how harmful they are because they are addicted to them," added Ms. Catton. "Different drugs have different withdrawal symptoms, but anxiety and severe depression are common to many. A person may find that they start using the drug again just to escape the depression that sets in after they quit. Intuition and the Flow of Life - Part 1 of 2

Albert Einstein once said, "The intellect has little to do on the road to discovery. There comes a leap in consciousness, call it intuition or what you will, and the solution comes to you, and you don't know how or why."

Intuition occurs naturally when you are living in a fluid way, detached from worries, "shoulds," and strong opinions and belief systems. The flow of life is a very simple pattern of movement. The subconscious is where inspiration is born. Where conscious and subconscious meet is what we refer to as intuition. At that point we have a conscious awareness, an idea or an inkling. As that idea grows in our consciousness, it begins to manifest into reality. Once manifested, our soul's needs are filled and we begin the process again. When we are at rest or asleep, our superconscious, or higher power, transfers new information and new energy to our subconscious, and the process continues its cycle. This is happening all of the time in each of us.

That's why I firmly believe that we can all be in the flow of life. However, when we come from a place of fear, we place layers of belief and filters of doubt in the way of manifesting the soul's higher purpose. We can choose to allow those filters to block the manifestation process—or we can choose to remove those blocks and allow the flow to continue.

It's your soul's higher purpose to manifest your divine destiny. You can try all you want to alter the course, to stop that movement, to control the forces, to fear the direction your choices might be taking you. But, you must eventually reach your soul's higher purpose, and when you step into that understanding, life becomes a flowing dance. You have choice, and when the choice follows the path of the heart, obstacles disappear as if by magic. Truly, the universe has ultimate influence, and you will eventually be given a reminder of the power of your own destiny. The more you ignore your intuition and the signals it sends, the more you will struggle, and the more disease, pain, and distress will enter into your life. However, you can choose to:

• claim the moment

• let go of the expectation of an outcome

• understand your beliefs and the effect they have on the process

• remove the filters that keep you from easily manifesting your soul's higher purpose

• allow the process to occur

Claim the Moment

One of my healing teachers and I were talking one day. I was proudly telling her that I had recently been learning patience through several "lessons" that had been appearing in my life. I was willingly taking on the assignments, although the episodes had been difficult and caused me various types of pain, both emotional and physical. She stopped me at that point and said, "MJ, be careful what language you are using to describe these instances. The spirits live in the moment. They are not looking at what you've done in the past or what the future is. If you ask for patience, they will give you reasons to have patience. Instead, say, 'I'm claiming the moment.' "

Language is powerful. And what we say and think has a significant effect on how we move in and through our lives. What we tell ourselves is a huge part of how we manifest things and has a direct impact on our health. I suggest to my clients that they do the following exercise for one day. I have them write a hash mark each time they catch themselves saying (aloud or internally) anything that comes from a place of fear, is negative, judgmental, or pessimistic. At the end of the day, I have them count up all the hash marks. Even those who believe their communication is positive are amazed at how many times their language fails them.

When you find yourself fearing the future or agonizing over the past, say to yourself, "I'm claiming this moment." It's a reminder to stay present, to release control, and to exult in the here and now.

Why is claiming the moment so important to the flow of life? Because when you are in that place, there is no anxiety about the future and no regret about the past. You've probably wondered before, "how to be outgoing?"

And if there were any magic that could help your conversations, it would have to be self-confidence. Having a high sense of self-worth drastically changes your interactions with others.

When you have self-confidence, you seldom feel at a loss for words. Other people are naturally drawn to you and talking becomes easy.

If you've ever been "in the zone" in conversation, you'll know what I'm talking about here. For example, before I got to a place in my life of more consistent self-confidence, I'd experience brief moments of "convo mojo." For whatever reason, in those moments I was feeling particularly good about myself and talking became easy. I could pull topics out of thin air and they were well received.

Unfortunately, those moments would never last. But by building a more consistent level of self-confidence, this "magic" conversation ability can be a normal thing for you.

Why Self-Confidence Helps So Much in Conversation

- You get your sense of worth from yourself. Since you already have a high sense of worth, you don't need acceptance from others to feel good. This removes the sense of neediness that can turn others off.

- You don't care what others think. Because you feel self-assured, you're more likely to just talk about whatever without analyzing every word. You don't worry if something will come across the right way; you just say it. If it's well received, great. If not, you don't care so much. What this means is you're talking MORE and that leads to more conversations.

- You share more about yourself. Self-disclosure is an important part of conversation and making new friends. When you feel good about your life and who you are, you're more likely to tell others about you. This builds trust and rapport.

- You have the guts to approach people. Obvious, but when you go up and talk to more people, you'll start more conversations. A higher self-esteem reduces your fear of rejection and lets you engage people in a natural way.

Take Action

So how do you get more self-confidence? Well, unfortunately you can't drink a magic potion and get self-worth overnight. Building your self-esteem takes time. So here are just a few suggestions to start you on the path to better confidence and conversation ability.

- Choose how you want your life to be and make it so. Pursue your interests, work on achieving your goals and do what makes you happy. When you're proud of your life, confidence follows.

- Face your fears head on. I once heard you build courage by facing your fears over and over. Once you begin to build courage, you get confidence as a by-product. I know from experience that when you face your fears (like talking to strangers) you usually see the fear itself is worse than the reality. This realization helps you move forward.

- Switch negative talk with positive talk. Many times we're telling ourselves stuff like "I'll never get better at this" or, "I can't do this" without even realizing. Become aware of your negative self-talk and stop it. Then replace it with phrases like "I will do what it takes to succeed" and "How can I do this?"

Competition - What's It Doing to You?

Competition gets all kinds of good attention. Economics professors talk about how great it is for business and athletes talk about how great it is for their performance.

But is competition really a good thing?

If you look carefully, you'll see that competition can actually hold you back - even consume you - if you let it take over your life.

The competition in your life started early - when you were a baby, to be exact. After all, you had to compete for your mother's undivided attention so you could have your diaper changed, get your bottle, or play in your swing.

From there, it only got worse. You had siblings and classmates to worry about. You were always trying to beat out the other kids - whether it was a game of kickball at recess, the annual school science fair, or for the attention of the cute girl on the playground. When you were better than the competition, you got a trophy, a ribbon, a certificate, or the honor of taking the cute little girl to the school dance. No matter what, there was always a reward.

Those rewards have only gotten bigger as you've gotten older. Now, there's not just a ribbon at stake - there's a major business deal at stake. You don't just want to have a nice car; you want the nicest car on the block.

That's why it's difficult to be competitive without being jealous - and one reason why competition can be so dangerous. After all, if you didn't get to take the little girl to the dance, you probably hated the boy who did. Or, if another company landed the big business deal you wanted, you're probably really jealous of them for it.

The dictionary defines being jealous as being "distrustfully watchful and suspicious". Does that sound like the person you want to be?

So, what's the solution?

Simple... Stop competing!

If you use what you want as a motivation, it can be a great thing. For example, if you really want that big business deal, use that feeling to prepare extra-hard for your meeting. But if you don't land the deal, don't become jealous over it.

Instead of hating the guy down the street for landing the deal, focus on your personal talents. Sure, the other guy got the business deal, but you're great at things he isn't. Maybe you're more personable to your clients than he is or maybe you have a better vision for the future of your company than he does for his. If you look at things that way, you'll be able to be happy for the guy down the street - instead of hating his guts.

Think of it this way - you'll probably never win an Olympic gold medal. But does that stop you from being happy for the people who do? When your favorite team wins the Super Bowl, are you jealous of the quarterback? No. You're just happy for your favorite athletes. If you can learn to adopt this attitude in everyday life, you'll be a lot happier and healthier.

The next time your competitive juices start flowing:

- Learn from others who are better at something than you are and use it to improve yourself.

- Surround yourself with happy, successful people, so it rubs off on you.

- Be inspired by someone else's success, instead of being jealous over it.

Remember, each day is a gift. If you let your ego have its way, you'll never be as happy as you could be. Instead, focus on filling your part of the world with the best you that you can be!

Let Go of the Expectation of an Outcome

Several years ago, as I prepared to go to my parent's home for a family event, I was planning my schedule, making an agenda, and driving myself crazy trying to fit everything into the time I would be there. I sat down and took a deep breath. The realization hit me that if I didn't have to meet anyone's expectations the trip would be a lot more joyful. Then I had an even deeper realization that if I didn't have expectations, or an agenda, or even a schedule, that the trip would be much simpler. I decided to try it. I allowed other people to make their schedules, and told them that, if possible, when they let me know the time and place, I'd be there. Even when it was last minute, I didn't care. In fact, last minute plans eliminated my creating outcomes in my mind. I just showed up, with no expectations.

The result was astounding. I floated through the 10 days. I was filled with joy. There were no promises that might be broken, no drama from having made plans that someone else didn't like, and with no expectations, I was never disappointed. By the end of the trip, everyone was asking me how I could remain so calm and happy when things seemed to be swirling around my large and loud family.

After that experience, I started to do that in my day-to-day life. Spontaneity has become very fun. When something comes up, I check with my intuition, stay present, and make the decision in the moment. Then I refrain from attaching expectations to the outcome, and as a result, am not disturbed by what might happen.

Understand Your Beliefs and Their Effects

What influences whether we listen to our intuition or not? Why do we deny our intuition and ignore the physical, mental, and emotional signs along the way? The greatest impact on our decision-making is our belief system. The influence on our beliefs comes from our experiences, who we choose to listen to, who we are sometimes indoctrinated to believe, and who we might aspire to revere.

I recently heard an analogy that John Welwood described in his book "Love and Awakening". When you are born, you are given a beautiful castle with hundreds of rooms, each representing a part of your inner world. The rooms are perfect, and each contains a gift. As a child, you explore each room with no preconceived ideas, no shame, no judgment. As you get older, you start hearing from others that certain rooms are not right, that you should lock them up to keep the castle safe. Because you desire acceptance and love, you close the room. Then another, and another. You stop listening to your inner voice and instead believe the opinions of others. In no time, you are living in a one-bedroom house in need of repairs.

I believe that we are all born with the same amount of joy in our hearts. We each begin our life with openness and come from a place of love. How we choose to respond to the voices we hear, the belief systems that are thrust upon us, will determine which rooms of our house we close and which stay open. When we come from fear, more rooms will remain closed. Love keeps the doors open.

Fear is not a bad thing, unless it becomes paralyzing. Fear can protect you from harm. And it can also keep you from enjoying the flow of life. However, for some reason in our culture, looking for the good in things, being positive, being fearless, has become a negative thing. Have you ever had someone say to you that you are not being "realistic"? What I want to know is why being negative and coming from a place of fear is more realistic than being open and loving?

According to estimates, 90% of what we worry about never happens. If negative worries have a 10% chance of being correct, doesn't that mean that being positive is more realistic? The important thing to ask yourself is why it's better to be fearful when you have a choice to be happy. After all, you have the same ability to choose love as you do to choose fear.

Remove the Filters

As I mentioned earlier, one of the most powerful means of change is language. Another significant method is visualization. Imagine the process of manifestation I described in Part 1. What filters (some people call them Gremlins, or voices of fear, etc.) keep you from moving toward your purpose? Picture them blocking the process. Then imagine yourself removing them, one by one. Take them out and allow the next moment to happen, without expectation. Allow the process to occur, instead of trying to control it. Free yourself from limiting beliefs and the idea that you aren't good enough. Regain your trust—in you, and in the universe and that which is your purpose, your destiny.

Allow the Process to Occur

Control is an aspect often overlooked in the discussion of fear. When something negative happens to us, particularly at a young age, we seek ways to make our environment safe, or to make others conform to our ideas, or to maintain a semblance of order. This need for control is a direct response to fear. In fact, it is the single most influential belief that compels us to ignore our intuition.

Allowing the process to occur requires letting go of the idea that we have, or more importantly, need to have control. Is that need really serving you? How much energy do you expend trying to maintain an outward appearance of control? When you get out of your own way and the flow begins to happen, you will see that all the energy you've expended on controlling the process or the outcome will begin to serve you, instead of blocking you from what you want in your life. Let go of an outcome, remove the filters, and allow the process to occur. Your inner voice will guide you if you allow it.

Time Management for Interruption-Based Professions

Let's face it - we're all busy, and that can make it difficult for us to manage our time, no matter how diligent we are about organizing, scheduling, and re-scheduling our tasks. Having a routine schedule can make it easier to streamline and group our tasks and activities, but not every profession or job lends itself to this sort of regularity.

When I work with professionals in fields like real estate, public relations, and sales, much of their work is predicated on the fact that they are going to be interrupted many times throughout their workday. These interruptions are usually well-warranted, as the things that generate revenue for these professionals often revolve around quick decisions and it's-happening-right-now updates from clients, partners, or vendors. If your work falls into one of these interruption-based professions or one that has a similar level of required responsiveness, there's often no choice other than to work with these interruptions. But how can you be responsive to the needs of others while still having some semblance of a manageable schedule?

Block your day. Although you'll probably have lots of interruptions throughout your day, you can still start with a basic framework for how you'd like your day to go. The key is to have your schedule be more loose and flexible than someone who has a more predictable structure for their day. I suggest creating small blocks of time for your various daily tasks - phone calls, emails, sales, client service, etc. - so you can have a skeleton of what you'd like to see happen from hour to hour. The major difference between your schedule and the schedule of someone who deals with fewer interruptions is this: if you are expecting lots of interruptions, have small time blocks instead of big ones, and leave lots of blank, unscheduled space in between them. That way, you'll be able to shift your blocks around and adjust your tasks and projects as you deal with daily fires and interruptions. When things are scheduled back-to-back-to-back, making schedule adjustments is much more difficult.

List your tasks. With an unpredictable schedule, it can be hard to know what task to do next when you happen to have a few moments of time in between interruptions. With sudden downtime, many of us simply default to working on email, which can become a major black hole for your time. For this reason, it's essential to have a running list of the tasks are key to you and to your business. Take a few minutes and write down all the tasks and projects that are important for your business to move forward.

Identify key priorities and duration. Once you've made your list of tasks, take a few minutes and note how long you expect each task to take, and the order in which you'd like to tackle your tasks. Maybe you'd like to spend an hour on a client proposal, or half an hour writing your next blog post or newsletter article. Note those details on your list. Without a clear priority and duration for each task, it's very hard to choose which task to work on next.

Fill the open spaces. You've now created a schedule with lots of open spaces between your time blocks, giving you flexibility to deal with interruptions. As you shift your scheduled blocks around, you'll see your open spaces between tasks shift as well. Use your task list to take advantage of these open spaces by plugging in your priority tasks into the free times in your calendar. Since you've listed the duration of each of your tasks, you can now clearly see whether your tasks will fit into your open time slots.

Having an interruption-based profession can be both exciting and challenging. The key to managing your time effectively when you have days that are always in flux is being flexible and adaptable, and making sure your time management strategy accounts for the way you work. You can't expect your day to flow the same way as someone else who has a more predictable schedule - but you can still get things done!

First it's important to understand that your words have incredible creative power. Imagine your life as a piece of canvas and your words are the paint. The words you use to describe yourself, how you feel and what is going on in your world become splashes of paint on this canvas that represents a depiction of your life.

Uplifting, positive words are vibrant, bright colors that will adorn your work of art. Whereas, sad, fear-based, limiting words will be dark, drab hues that will be your palette. What does your canvas look like? Have you ever stopped and listened to the words you say throughout the day? Do you know what you sound like to others when they hear you talk?

If you started your day with a mini recorder taped on your shoulder and played it back at the end of the day you might be shocked and embarrassed at the words you use to describe yourself, talk about others and how much you complain about stuff that 99% of the time doesn't really matter in the big scheme of things. Hitting the play-back button can really be a wake-up call to creating a better future.

Listen to other people's words, what paints are they using to create their masterpiece? Words like: I'll never be successful, I'm too old, too fat, too stupid, who will ever love me, I'm not worth it, no one cares, I hate my life, I'm sick of people, I'm a loser, I'm exhausted, I'm devastated, I'm worn out and on and on. These kinds of thoughts and words aren't going to paint a pretty picture.

What people don't understand it is the power within our words that creates how we live our lives. If you find yourself going down that poor-me-nothing-ever-goes-right path or you start moaning and complaining stop yourself. STOP being against yourself by putting yourself down. I challenge you to make 2012 the year you never say another negative thing about yourself again!

Instead, start your day by saying, Good morning beautiful, you wonderful, warm, fun person! Today is going to be a great day. Good things are in my life and I'm excited to see what happens next. Every day in every way I'm getting better and better! After you pick yourself off the floor from the shock of being nice to yourself, your days might actually turn out better than usual. And the masterpiece you create with these words will rival Van Gogh!

It may not be easy at first because you are not used to painting your life with your words. But, once you begin to see that you have the power to choose your palette, to create a true work of art from your very own words, perhaps then you can begin to paint a real masterpiece which will be your life! You are an artist!

Take care of your body, and find that happiness follows. Having a healthy mind, on the other hand, means engulfing your mind with positive thoughts and information. The people who think non-stop about all the pain and hurt they have felt in the past have very little hope of being truly happy. Instead, focus on positive mind-enhancing thoughts.

Feel good about yourself. First, one must realize that no one is perfect - we all have imperfections. The sooner we realize this, the happier we will feel about our uniqueness. We are all given talents and strengths, welcome them as blessings into your life. In the same manner, accept your faults and shortcomings because they are part and parcel of who we are as people. Unhappiness stems from thinking that others are better off than we are. Whatever cards we were dealt with, make the most of it. Be contented with who you are, because you'll never really know who else is wishing that she could exchange places with you.

Face your problems. Show me someone who does not have problems - is there such a person? The only person who does not have problems is one who is no longer living. Problems are challenges - they are in our lives to teach us lessons that help us to be stronger. Stop worrying and regretting, and form realistic expectations from life. The sooner we realize that problems are inevitable, the sooner we will feel that there is hope despite the adversities. Whatever we encounter, always think that there is a solution - that's the key to being happy "despite."

Learn to be satisfied with what you have. Among all the things listed here, I feel this is the core to one's happiness. Being dissatisfied and unhappy is usually caused by wanting to have what others have. Some want more money, more fame, a higher position, a happy family life, a great husband, or all in all - a better life. It's okay to have dreams and aspirations, but you must be willing to work hard for them. And in working towards your dreams, you must be happy, in order to achieve supreme results. Some people, however choose to be happy and satisfied with what they have - which may be the better way to view life in general. Get rid of envy, it will only extinguish all that joy within you. Start being happy with your blessings, for you are luckier than some other people in the world - you can bet on it.

Surround yourself with good friends. Good friends help you to remain positive and happy. No human being is meant to be alone. We are social beings. Friends remind us of how great we are, and tell us about our good qualities. And there's so much joy to be found in being part of a group - the feeling of being important and needed by others. With good friends, you are also able to practice other qualities that make you a better person, like kindness, compassion, sacrifice and being a man for others.

Just enjoy life! The truth is, we can never be happy 100% of the time. Sadness is also part of life. Without sadness, we will never appreciate joy. Without fear, we will never know of courage. Without failure, we will not value success. Learn to enjoy life and all its quirks. Go with the flow, search for adventure, follow your dreams, and meet people who will give more meaning to your life. Life is cool. Life is fun - just enjoy life and experience true happiness!

Moms: I'm Finally Taking Your Advice

"When you're older, you'll understand." I can't count the number of times my mother has said this to me. I didn't believe her, until recently. A few things she said throughout my childhood are starting to ring very true. Like these:

Make time for yourself:
Basically from the second I passed that driver's license test, I was moving nonstop. I crammed in as much as possible in every day. Homework, softball practice, pizza with buddies, maybe a party. It seemed I was always in a rush. No hour of my day was just…unscheduled. My mom said this in a sing-song tone as I dashed out the kitchen door for the umpteenth thing I "had to do" that day, "just be sure to take time for yourSELF." And I would say "yeah, yeah." But never did. I moved at those warp speeds into my college years and never felt an issue with it. It's only recently, as a college graduate and working person, that I am beginning to experience the negative effects of making no time for myself. I will get aggravated with those around me. I'll even experience some depression, feeling like I don't know myself. I will become unable to focus on my work (and that is secretly my brain saying I just want to think about NOTHING for a little bit). I'm realizing that time for personal reflection, or even time to think about nothing at all, is crucial for re-charging. Plenty of us consider partying with our buddies as just another way of re-charging, but it's just not. You have to listen to other people's stories. You have to consider the impression you are giving off. Your mind is still working at high speeds. Full relaxation of the brain only happens when you're by yourself. That's why I decided to finally do what I've always wanted and track down a singing teacher. I use a program called The Singing Zone which created by voice coach Per Bristow which lets me work on my technique from home.

Let men chase you:
This advice used to drive me nuts. I would think "how old world of her." To me, letting a man chase me meant playing games. It entailed allowing myself to take on a damsel in distress position. Since then I've discovered that that wasn't my mom's meaning. I had to do things that made me look desperate though first, to see that. My mom was trying to tell me not to overwhelm a man. If he asks you out and you want to go, go. If you see him calling on your phone and you feel like answering, answer. But, don't ask him out three times in a row. Don't show up at his home unannounced to make him a surprise dinner he didn't ask for (unless you're in a serious relationship and it's established that you are always welcome). Don't give him heaps of presents when he hasn't bought you even one. Essentially, let him know that you know your worth and let him show you that he knows it too.

When Will You Be Happy?

Okay my friends listen up. I have been talking to a lot of people lately who are not happy and 99% of the time they blame it on someone else or something else. Well here's a news flash: no one can make you unhappy but you! Yes, things are going to happen in life you don't like. Things will happen that will rock your world and turn it upside down. But...

Remember, it's not what happens to us in life that matters, what matters is how we CHOOSE to view it. Your interpretation of what happens is how you are going to experience it. Sure, in the beginning of any mind blowing event you will be knocked off your feet. You can even have a pity party and I'll come to it! But no one wants to attend the same party over and over again and neither should you.

For some people this next statement may be hard to fathom but, drum roll please....Happiness is a choice!

You can allow life's circumstances control how you feel or you can control how you feel. You have the power inside your mind to choose how you want to react to life. You have this mind that can make heaven out of hell or hell out of heaven. It's all about what you CHOOSE to tell yourself over and over and over again about what has happened to you or what is happening to you.

Many people are waiting to be happy. I just taught a class on goal setting and creating your intention. As you know a goal is something you aspire to at some point in the future. People live there life believing they will be happy WHEN they reach that place in the future.

I will be happy when I meet someone. I will be happy when I get out of debt. I will be happy when I move out of this place. I will be happy when I get married, or divorced for that matter. Why are you waiting to be happy? Another news flash: You will be happy when you decide you will be!

One of the most important aspects in my class is to impart the fact that goals are great but it's all about enjoying the journey along the way. Life is the journey. You can't wait until you get somewhere to be happy, you're already here. Now is the time to be happy. Right now.

If you live your life waiting for something to happen until you are happy, you will waste most of your life wanting and waiting and never fully living.

So how can you be happy when you don't feel happy? You begin by looking at the blessings in your life. Instead of focusing on what you don't want and what makes you feel bad, focus your thoughts on how fortunate you are in so many other ways that may have let slipped your mind.

Look, we all have issues and things going on, that's life. But when you truly grasp the concept that all you have is right now; you can either enjoy it or miss out on it. When you dwell on the past, feeling guilty or regretful for things, where are you? Not here, not living right now. You are living in the past and believe me that is nowhere to live.

Or, if you are worried about the future and your fears and doubts cause you more stress and anxiety, how does that affect you right now? You can't live in the future so why continue to project you mind out there; onto things that may or may not even happen?

Just for today, take a break from the past, shelve your worries about the future and live for right now. Be at peace and enjoy today, enjoy your friends and your family. Enjoy nature, a good movie, or a walk. Each time you catch yourself going down the road that leads to negativity, stop yourself and stay on the path towards gratitude.

Life is a gift we are given each and every day. Don't wait to be happy. Celebrate life!

How Our Happiness Changes With Age

How often have you been asked the question, "Are you happy?" And as you scramble around your brain for the answer to the question, how often have you based your response to this question on any of the following factors: 1) your financial situation, 2) family life, 3) work achievements, or 4) relationship status?

Too many times, we base our happiness on these things… and guess what? You may be right. These 4 factors are indeed the most common things people try to perfect in their lives. Failure in one or more aspects does cause some discontentment or unhappiness - at least, for most people.

I asked my 15 year old nephew what his concept of happiness is. He answered, "Being able to do all the things I want." My follow-up question: "without regard for consequences?" He surprisingly said YES. Further inquiry gave me some insight as to how he felt - that true happiness for someone so young and idealistic was equivalent to freedom, with no fear of repercussions. In short - irresponsible, reckless and selfish fulfillment of all wants and desires. It's true that children were born needy and self-centered. But as people grow older, they realize that happiness is relative to their ability to survive in the midst of other people.

As we gain maturity, especially true in our 30's and 40's, we are faced with realities. First, that no matter how hard we think otherwise, it's hard to survive without money. It's a reality of life. And in our pursuit of money, sadly we slowly think that having it, or lots of it will "buy" us happiness. Why not, when the wealthy are able to eat the best food, drink the finest wines, live in the most luxurious houses, and be labeled as "successful?" Of course, with money comes power - another thing that supposedly makes some people happy… but power is never without consequences. Some of these consequences are the things that cause major pain to most people - failure, stress, broken families, and possibly even health problems.

For some people, happiness is measured by their ability to deal with above-stated consequences. Failure is painful, but they help us appreciate happiness more. Stress is inevitable, but when we master the art of controlling it, we become stronger as persons. Most people succumb to stress - making it the most common cause of poor health. But if we have a supportive family and loved ones, stress becomes less of a challenge and failure is easier to accept.

People in their 50's are said to experience the most sadness. This is probably due to their realization that they were unable to achieve most of what they want to achieve, acquire what they want to acquire, live the life they want to live. And the unhappiness is compounded by the fact that there's so little time left to get the things they want.

But the sadness does not last forever. When a person realizes that he has no choice but to live with what he was able to acquire and amass (wealth, possessions or maybe even debt), from denial, he enters into a period of acceptance. This is most evident at the ages of 60 and over.

They say that older people, despite their decreased mobility and health issues are on the average happier than younger, more-stressed people. This is because they have less aspirations and expectations from themselves. The less you expect, the less the possibility of disappointment. They have the ability to master their emotions and get a grip on reality - perhaps because they have lived through a lot of failures already in life. They have more wisdom and psychological intelligence, and thus worry less about trying to please people all the time. They live in the moment and worry less about the future. These factors really serve as valuable lessons to younger people.

People in the last years of their lives have a greater appreciation for life. They no longer have senseless needs and wants - they know that these are not the true measures of happiness. They no longer stress about the trivial things - because they know that much of the trivialities in life are not important in their senior years. They see each day as another chance to achieve happiness - thus resulting in a deep sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Maybe the true secret to happiness is indeed living each day as though it were your last one.

Pay Attention

Pay attention to what you pay attention to. Most people aren't aware of what they are focused on because they are sleep walking through life so to speak, they live on auto-pilot. And, 70% of the time people are paying attention to what they are worried about, what they don't like about themselves or their life and who or what has them upset.

Then there are those who know what they are paying attention to because it consumes them. They feel hurt, betrayed, fearful, worried, full of doubt, full of anger and just plain miserable. You know you should stop thinking about this but you can't seem to stop yourself. And get clear on this: you are paying dearly for the attention you give to your problems!

When you focus solely on these limiting thoughts and hurtful feelings and you are consumed by them, how do you think you're going to experience life? Worse yet, how are you infecting and affecting the people around you? You can let it ruin your health, steal your joy and cause you to miss out on so much.

The thing of it is it doesn't have to be this way because you were born with the divine gift of your mind. You can either be the master of your mind or its servant. You can either choose to think about your problems or you can choose to think about your blessings. I could go on and on about the choices you have and how they impact your life.

But until you decide that you are no longer going to give all of your attention to what's wrong in your life you will pay for that choice with sadness, fear, anger, more hurt, despair, heartache, depression, and misery.

So how do you stop it? You stop giving it your attention. You can't think of two things at the same time so choose which one you are going to think about. What makes you happy or sad? What you're afraid of or hopeful for? What you hate or love? What you want or what you don't want? What you want to stop or what you want to start?

I hear this all of the time when working with people. They feel the way they do because they choose to think about what makes them feel bad! Think of where you are right now and where you want to go from here. Typically all that people think about is where they are right now. They jump in, wallow in it, swim around in it, sink further in and keep themselves stuck and then act like there is no way out!

When the reality is there is a way out and it all starts with you becoming the master of your mind. It all starts with what you choose to pay attention to.

Look, there is no question that things happen that can rock your world, that's life. But once the earthquake is over you can pick up the pieces and put your head back on straight or you can walk around in the emotional debris that you refuse to clean up.

We all make choices in life and if you want to choose to pay attention to what makes you feel bad, yet you want to be happy; you have to choose which is worth you giving your attention to. One is very costly to your happiness and the other causes happiness. So, pay attention to and choose!
