Developing A Product

You don't need to be famous in order to develop new products. Rather, you should follow your ideas and dreams and act upon them. You may have exactly what the public is looking for, but couldn't find anywhere. How often have we looked at a new product and thought, "I should have designed that!" The simplest ideas are sometimes the ones that people want and need. Here are some steps to help you get your ideas developed and marketed.

1) Brainstorm. So you have a great idea that you've been contemplating. Take your ideas and write them down. Think about them and the possibilities of how you can change things to make them even better. Write down your objectives, materials and goals for the product. Who might be interested in this particular product? You need to think outside the box and ask others for help as needed.

2) Screening. Now that you have a good idea of what you want to develop, it's time to talk to others about it. You can get opinions from potential customers, family, friends, employees, and even the media. You can post a poll on Facebook or on your blog. Find out what weaknesses there may be, including the weaknesses of similar products. Give people an option of which they'd buy, based on products already on the market compared to your product. Try to figure out who your competition will be.

3) Evaluate. Now it's time to get down to brass tacks. You need to estimate the costs, revenue and profit that you can make from the product. You can also do some market research to find out how well your product might be received. Target the largest group of people who might be the most interested.

4) Develop. It's now time to physically design and manufacture the product. You will quickly be able to troubleshoot problems and learn about profit. You can test the product on family and friends once you have actually developed it. It's a good idea to find out a reasonable cost for the product, based on similar products already on the market. In order to attract customers to your product, you may have to lower or raise the cost, offer incentives or change the product.

5) Commercialize. It's time to begin selling to businesses, now that you have tested and tried the product. Make enough of the product so that stores can keep your product in stock. You can get a better idea of how to handle this by hiring a PR firm to assist you in the details and publicity.

It takes both time and energy to develop a new product. Not everyone will appreciate your hard work, time and effort. Remember that while you may not get it right the first time, you are learning how not to do things. You will eventually develop a product that works, but it will take perseverance and hard work!
