5 Tips on How To Get What You Want From 2012

The New Year is always the best time to realize that by making too many resolutions, the possibility of us not fulfilling them becomes greater. We want a lot of things, seek to change a lot of habits, aim to do a truckload of stuff - all within a year. The result is - we get too overwhelmed, that by the middle of January, we make a new resolution - which is to not make any resolutions ever again!

As in life, it always pays to take small steps and do these small steps excellently. By the end of the month, you'll realize you've done a lot…and by the end of the year, you'll even surprise yourself with what you are capable of achieving. It is always better to do one little thing greatly, than to do one great thing half-baked.

So what are the secrets to get what you want this 2012? How do we minimize the possibility of us giving up on our goal?

Think of the things you don't want, and remember that these are the things you should avoid. Oftentimes, we want and aim to do so much that we lose track of how we intend to do them. Instead of thinking of what to do, why not think of what not to do? Make a mental list of the things to avoid, like procrastination, tardiness, getting sick too often due to stress, worrying too much, etc. With these guidelines in mind, you have a better perspective as what to list among your priorities for the year 2012.

If you find it hard to accomplish the things on your to do list, why not focus on eliminating from your life all the things written on your "avoid list?" At the very least, even if you have not been true to your new year's resolutions, you can still proudly say that you have at least corrected your bad habits. Nice!

List down all your resolutions. It's easy to forget something if you do not write it down. This is not the time to make mental notes - write them down on a piece of paper, because things become clearer as you choose each word to jot down. You start your journey into introspection - and think of related ideas or strategies pertinent to each resolution. If you just try to memorize 10 things on January 1, try remembering them after a month and you'll realize that you only internalized 2 or 3.

There goes the mental resolution list! Remember - you cannot do something you cannot do something that you cannot even recall. Makes sense, doesn't it?

Keep your goals simple. Writing too much, on the other hand, makes things even harder to achieve. Sure, it's fun to explain everything down to the last detail - but not being able to accomplish your plan to a T makes you feel somehow defeated - even if you did manage to finish a goal. Don't overdo your belief in yourself. Try to keep you expectations simple. Don't unconsciously disappoint yourself by expecting too much.

Don't obsess about your new year's resolution list! You can't really accomplish much by thinking about your goals 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Sticking too much to your list will only increase the possibility of disappointment. Further, if you made a mistake on your goals for the year, don't dwell to much on it- just learn your lesson. Sometimes, fate has its strange way of teaching us life lessons through failure that no form of success can teach us. Mistakes make us stronger and better equipped for life's challenges.

Start anew. Don't make a list of what not to do, and yet go back to doing them 3 months after. When you promise yourself to avoid something, it does not mean that you should stop doing it (especially bad habits, such as smoking and drinking) for half a year only/ Dignify your efforts by not slipping back into your old habits. The new year provides a new beginning, a fresh start, so don't disappoint your own self.

There's nothing stopping you from being the best person you can be - you are the master of your own destiny.
