There are things we can do to make it a less awful experience, but in a sense, it is a rite of passage. When we first come in to recovery, we are asked, "Would you do whatever it takes to stay clean and sober?"

This is one of those times. We have to be willing to do whatever it takes, no matter how uncomfortable it is or how much we don't want to do it. That is what separates those who will find and appreciate the gift of recovery, and those who brush off the gift, taking it for granted.

Here's a quote that I love: "All the water in the world cannot drown you unless it gets inside of you." -Eleanor Roosevelt. I know that we all have things that if we let them they can get under your skin and will disrupt your peace of mind. And, they often do.

These things can range from big to small, mildly irritating to earth shattering. There are things that bother you that someone said, or didn't say. A boss that no one likes or respects but all you can do is put up and shut up.

Relationship issues from kids, partners, friends and neighbors. Money related stuff, worries, fears and a whole lot of other garbage that needs to be disposed of on trash day.

But what we do instead of tossing it out is we allow it to creep inside our thoughts and minds and then let it wreak havoc on what could be a really nice day.

What You Think Matters!

The reality is that no matter what you are going through you can either let it in or keep it out and it all boils down to one thing; what you think. Every time I want to go down that road and start to worry about or fret over something, I have to remind myself of two major factors which always do the trick.

Although they are fairly basic principles and ones that we are all familiar with, we have a tendency to forget to tap into them because we're too busy being mad or feeling hurt or angry or disappointed or whatever it is you're feeling.

These two things can be used together or apart but you have to at least do your best to tune into one of them and when you change the way you look at things the things you look at will change.

And these two things are….drum roll please…." Faith and Gratitude." Oh I know it sounds so cliché but guess what? They work.

If you actually believe in God (or whatever you call your version of God) then where's your faith? Truly trusting that God is guiding you in ALL that you do, and I mean really believing it, then all the fear, fretting and other stuff that goes along with worrying will be replaced with the peace of knowing that everything is going to work out in the end.

If you really are a believer then you will KNOW that God is guiding you to the right place. And, to take it one step further, you are actually in the right place right now along your journey through life.

When you have faith even through the tough times, especially through the painful times, then you're talking serious faith. So do you believe? Or, do you just kinda believe?

The other major-mind-changing-exercise is to think of all of the things that you still have in your life to be grateful for regardless of whatever it is you're going through.

Oh I know, once again, so cliché! But let me tell you this; I'd rather be corny and cliché than suffer and be a victim of my circumstances any day of the week.

Plus there is nothing like putting the real deal about life into perspective. When you put your faith in what you say you believe in then there really is no need to worry, fret and be fearful.

So when things are bothering you and you're drowning in your own emotional turmoil turn to the best thing you have in life; your faith and being grateful. When you do that, no matter what's going on, you can still be happy in spite of it.

How Do You Know When It's Time To Go To Detox?

One of the great things about recovery is that we see the impossible happen everyday. The kinds of things that we see aren't ever, under any circumstances, supposed to happen. We see people go through detox for drug addiction and alcoholism for a varied of reasons, but the end result is always the same: they just cannot continue living the way they have for any longer.

For many, the first question they'll have is, "When should I go to a detox program?" Our answer is almost always, "The moment you need to ask when you should go!"

Addicts and alcoholics are notorious procrastinators. How many times have you heard an addict or alcoholic say that tomorrow they will take care of this, or call that person, or make that appointment, or any other number of things which ultimately do not happen? What is usually the response when they get called out on it? "I'll do it tomorrow/next week/later."

Our favorite is always the "later" response. So, when exactly is "later"? Why is this hypothetical future time any better than right now if you don't know when later is?

It seems like a perfectly reasonable answer when we first hear it, but for some, the problem lies in that "later" is sometimes "too late."

We have no guarantees about today, tomorrow, or any point in the future. When we get sober and put some time together, we see that a daily reprieve--in the truest sense of the word--is given to alcoholics and addicts that cannot be taken for granted. A reprieve means being taken to the gallows, and the moment a hand is ready to pull the lever to release the doors and send you plummeting downwards, the message comes in at the last moment that the addict or alcoholic will not meet his or her fate today. It will be reserved for "later."

It is one thing to find a drug and alcohol treatment center that is good for you or your loved one. That is not procrastination--that is due diligence, and something everyone should do before going to a program. However, there are risks with taking too long to make the decision on where to go. In many instances, this is a calculated risk that works out in the end, but as with any risk, there are other times where it can lead to tragedy.

Let's be frank: not many alcoholics and addicts have matters that are so pressing that they cannot wait until after getting help. Courts are often very understanding of these circumstances, and are more than willing to make concessions if a valid attempt at getting help is made. Work will want a more productive and healthy employee. Social circles (if they are worth anything) will want you or your loved one to get the help that they need.

When a person needs help, the time to get that help is immediately. No waiting, no putting it off, no conditions…There may not be another opportunity.

Family Counseling Is Mandatory To The Recovery Process

Unfortunately, a lot of the time, friends and family of an addict or alcoholic don't think family counseling is necessary. They basically just drop the addict or alcoholic off, expecting them to be "fixed" (not in the veterinary sense of the word), and have them back as good as new.

Family counseling is mandatory. If it were that easy, then that would be great. However, it doesn't work like that.

Ironically, usually the addict or alcoholic is the healthiest person in the family. That's usually a hard thing to hear as a family member of an addict or alcoholic, but it isn't a bad thing. After all, you can't fix a problem if you don't know that one exists.

The addict/alcoholic is the healthiest one because they are so acutely aware of what is going on within the family and their environment. They can see that there are huge issues within the family system that aren't being addressed, and in many cases, that those issues are getting worse rather than better.

Drugs and alcohol are nothing more than an escape--whether it be from pain or reality altogether. That the addict or alcoholic felt that they had no where else to turn other than drugs and/or alcohol means that they could no longer reconcile the disparity between what should be and what is.

Please know that no one is to blame for an addict or alcoholic's behavior. We are all responsible for the choices we make and the consequences that result. However, to expect that an alcoholic or addict will be "fixed" and sent right back into the same system which drove them to drinking and using in the first place is a recipe for disaster.

Especially in teen recovery programs, there is a much greater tendency to approach this problem as such. Many just assume that it is rebellion that has gotten out of control. For some, that may be true, but without the participation of the addict or alcoholic's family, there is no way to tell. This is why family counseling is crucial to the recovery and healing process of addiction.

Think about it: would you trust a drug addict or alcoholic to tell a counselor the whole truth about what they are doing and what is going on--especially when there may not be any interest in finding recovery? We doubt it because we've been there before ourselves. Even if they were willing to reveal everything to the counselors, they may not be aware of or remember key things that may be going on.

Alcoholism and addiction are a family disease. That means that it isn't one person's fault, or that one person is responsible for how things are. A family is a team that consists of more than one person, so it is highly unlikely that only one person is responsible for what happens within a family dynamic.

Fortunately, we have some of the greatest family counselors in the world, and they have dealt with seemingly hopeless cases before. It is a beautiful thing watching families who have been torn apart by drug and alcohol addiction and come back together, and we want everyone to have the best chance at success.

The word I'm referring to is LOVE. It is one of the greatest gifts received and given.

L - Let me be an expression and leave an impression of love wherever I go.

O- Open my inner eyes and ears to truly hear and see how I can care for myself and others today.

V - Visualize from whom or where I am withholding love and ask for guidance; then be still enough to hear the whispers of wisdom of how.

E - Experiences are opportunities for me to grow and love more; therefore all happenings are a call for my full attention, especially the ones I find most challenging.

When you're feeling good, the desire to be loving and kind seems so natural. It's as if there is no other way you could be.

Love just flows with little thought or effort.

If we all acted from the quiet and knowing space of kindness rather than the thought or expectation of what we believe it to be, then the world would be quite different.

You may not be able to change people or events, but you can be loving towards them. If not in your actions, then in your heart and thoughts.

Think of someone or something where you feel you are holding back love.

Write down all the ways you are currently feeling towards that person or event.

Take a few deep breaths and imagine an immense feeling of love flowing to and through you. As it does, imagine it restoring your ability to love.

What, if anything, could you now say or do in this situation? This isn't about expectations of how things will be, rather it's allowing you to be all you can be and not harbouring negativity.

Notice how you are feeling towards that person or event now.

Continue to repeat this exercise until you begin to feel lighter.

You make choices each and every day. Some decisions are conscious and others seem to happen without so much as a thought, but you are still choosing.

You choose what time you will rise or go to bed, what you are going to eat or drink, what you are going to wear, what you are going to watch or read, what you are going to do or not going to do today, what road(s) you are going to travel, etc.

Decisions are made by you during the day whether you are aware of them or not.

Did you know you also choose your thoughts? The way you are going to be or the way you will handle things is up to you. It may not always seem like you have an option on how you feel or what you think, but you do.

You CAN decide whether you will forgive or not forgive, whether you will be kind or unkind, whether you will be encouraging or discouraging, or fair or unfair, or honest or dishonest, or at peace or war with yourself, others, and life.

These choices are sometimes the most difficult ones to make and seem as though they are out of your control, but they aren't.

When things transpire in life that are less than desirable, even downright hurtful, tragic, unjust, unfair, unpleasant, or inconceivable, it can feel like there are aren't any choices available to you. There are.

At first you may be so traumatized or shocked by the event(s) that you are stricken by extreme emotions. It can be that way for quite sometime, eventually you will come to a place of choice again.

You may never forget what has happened, but you can make choices to heal, to grow, to be a better person and learn to move forward and to love and find peace and joy again.

Mahatma Gandhi said, "Be the change you want to see in the world".

Whatever it is you wish to see, be.

Within triumphs, as well as within tragedies, lie the possibility for goodness and change.

No, change is not always easy and neither are the choices you may make, but they can make a positive difference in your life, and often in the lives of others, even if you can't see that immediately.

Don't make hasty or emotionally charged decisions. In my experience doing so is not always the best one or outcome. Being spontaneous is much different then making quick or emotional choices.

Take your time when you are making decisions.

Breathe again. Stop and take things in. Validate and evaluate where are you right now. What's going on for you? What are you feeling? What do you need to do for you? What's working or not working for you anymore? What, if anything, do you need to add to or remove from your life?

Gain some clarity. When you see things clearer it makes it easier to decide what you're going to or not going to do next.

Allow your emotions to settle. Often when something occurs our emotions are running high; let your feelings calm down before making decisions. Find your center, that victorious space within you.

Look at your choices. Sometimes it seems like there aren't any options. See if you can put things in a different light or perspective because often when you do, it becomes easier to see that which you didn't see or understand before.

Weigh the pros and cons of a decision before making it.It helps when you can see the positives and negatives of the choices you are making; one side will usually outweigh the other and therefore is easier to know whether that is the best choice for you at this time.

Be an active ingredient in the choices and changes in your life.

Don't wait for someone or something to change before you do. Make a choice to do what is best for you today. Be that which you are looking for in or from another.

Old patterns, behaviours, and mind-sets that are not in your best interest can be challenging to break free from, but it is possible, and the choice is yours.

It's time to let go of what is holding you back or captive, or keeping you stuck in negative thoughts and emotions that aren't allowing you to grow and expand.

Move forward again; be at peace; live life the best you can; make choices that are helpful for you and recognize when you aren't.

The choices you make really can make a difference in your life, so choose wisely.

An angel appear to him saying " we need your help". He responded, I am willing to help, what do you need? They said what they needed was difficult and he responded that he was willing. They said a darkness had come over the Planet… And most souls were too weak to handle the darkness… He repeated he would help, what did the angels need from him? They said they needed him to take on this darkness as many souls were too weak. He responded, I will do it. They told him that it would be hard because he would not "remember"….and he might get lost in the darkness… He said he would do it…. for the others.

Good and Evil On Planet Earth

Who is going to take on the darkness from the broken Brahmahvara in the Gulf of Mexico? Who is going to take on the darkness that will enter the Planet via the super massive black hole that is aligning with Planet Earth now?

Who will go to war to process the violence and conflict that is pouring onto the Planet now? Who will kill and main and be killed and injured to protect those of us who are not strong enough to process these energies?

If it is true that Jerusalem is to be the site of the final battle between light and dark, good and evil, then the people's who spiritually choose to carry the dark energy poured onto the Planet are sacrificing themselves for all of us.

To us they appear to be enemies and are declared so by their political stances, but in reality they are part of the process of the ending of a cycle on Planet Earth, the preamble to entering the Golden Age. Jerusalem, Israelis, Palestinians, all willing to battle for all of us souls, sacrificing themselves by processing the energies of conflict and violence's so that our souls can be free. And lets not forget Jesus Christ It is time you recognized your mastery and your destiny. You are good, and if you have behaved "badly" it was always with the intention to help others.

It is time now to put down your weapons whether they be guns or words. It is time to let go of your guilt that you were not a better person and see that at the deepest level you wanted what was good for all. Do not try to understand the details of your life, just know that it is now that you must truly let go and go inside to find your goodness and your power.

It is not too late to you say you are sorry, but it is to yourself that you must apologize because you have not had enough compassion for what you have been through. Stop feeling guilty, stop feeling inadequate and start at this moment to access your destiny and your wisdom.

Take the time now to align with the most important event in human history, the formation of the Sacred Tree of Life in the stars. Take the time to ensure your internal Tree of Life is aligned with that Sacred Tree.

Does My Ex Ever Think of Me?

This is the age old question that everyone who is going through the end of a relationship wants to know. And, it's the one question that you may never have the answer to. For arguments sake let's say that your ex is thinking of you.

Does that make you feel better? Sure, you want to have mattered in this person's life that you devoted so much of your life to. You want to know that all of the love, time and commitment meant something. And, you may also feel that it validates your worth on some level.

If they are any kind of decent person and you shared a "real" relationship with them, of course it's only natural for them to think of you from time to time. But the reality is they are probably not thinking of you in the way you wish they were.

Or, conversely, let's say they really aren't thinking of you and they are actually going on with their life. How does that make you feel? Most times it drives you crazy because here you are not being able to think of much else but them, and there they are skipping merrily down Divorce or Breakup Lane.

It is so difficult to even comprehend how they can just dismiss you or discard what you shared and move on so easily with their life when you are suffering and all you seem to do is think of them.

Now here are the cold hard facts. It really doesn't matter if they are thinking of you or not. Oh, maybe it will soothe your crushed ego but in the long run you are never going to know anyway so what's the difference?

Even if you had the opportunity to ask them if they think of you, what do you think the answer will be? "Oh sure I do, you were a big part of my life. Or, not really because I'm so busy." Seriously, which response is going to make a difference if your relationship is over?

If your marriage or relationship is over and your ex is clearly moving on with his/her life what good would it do for them to think of you and dwell on the past? And, what good does it do for you? Does it make you feel better to think of them all of the time? Or, does it make you feel worse?

Do you want to think of them all of the time? Of course you don't. So why do you want them to think of you all of the time?

Typically it is to validate that you meant something to them and trust me, you did mean something or they wouldn't have spent so much time with you in the first place. But, the painful reality is sometimes people's feelings change and you are left holding the bag so to speak.

The emotional baggage that comes inside that bag you are holding onto isn't worth another precious second of your time. So throw it out with the trash. Bless them and release them from your mind and heart. Begin to pick up the pieces of your life and move on and before you know it you won't be thinking of them either.

A Reason to Complain

Last January I bought a brand new electric car, the Fisker Karma. Same one singer Neil Young and actor Leonardo Dicaprio have. Same one actor Ashton Kutcher drives on the TV series, Two and a Half Men.

I was excited to contribute to the environment in a positive way with a sports car that uses solar energy and electric power to get me around. I was one of the first in the country to own one. I was one of a handful in Texas alone. Plus the car looks stunning. People stop and stare. The car is just plain sexy.

But I had problems with it since day one.

Before I even received it, it was recalled. The battery had to have a different clamp to prevent possible fires. Once I did receive it, there were numerous little issues. In fact, I listed 17 of them to show the service department.

For example, sometimes when I was driving it, traveling at sixty miles an hour on a country road, the car would turn off. Off! It would reboot itself in the middle of the drive. The first time it happened was pretty scary, as I didn't know if I would lose control of the car. I didn't, but gee whiz, that wasn't comfortable at all.

Other times the car would be playing some of my favorite music, when suddenly and for no apparent reason, it would switch to a Latino AM station.

And then there were the times when the car ran out of stored electric energy and rolled over to the gas powered generator, which makes more electric juice. At those moments, at least for a few minutes, the climate control in the car malfunctioned and the inside cabin heated up. I live in Texas. You rarely want the car to heat up. And when you do, you want it to be your idea.

Then there were the fires.

Two Fiskers caught on fire. Fires aren't pretty. I saw the Texas wildfires. I saw Nerissa's car on fire in 2011. It's more than unsettling.

The last Fisker fire triggered a recall of all the cars. Over 2,000 of them. Again, I took mine in, and was shocked to learn the company decided to not give loaner cars anymore. I paid $100,000 for the car, they are recalling it and inconveniencing me and everyone else, and they won't give a rental car to ease my pain? It was appalling.

After the last trip to the San Antonio dealership, I called them and reported the car still had two issues. They took notes and said they'd call me back.

They didn't.

And the following day I received a snail mail letter saying that same dealership was surrendering their Fisker franchise. I'd have to go elsewhere for my repairs and service.

What the - ?

Then, at the end of last October, 16 Fisker Karmas caught fire and burned to the ground after being submerged in saltwater from Hurricane Sandy. They were all at dock in New Jersey, not delivered to any customers yet, but still.

And then the battery maker for the Fisker went bankrupt, forcing Fisker to stop making cars for a while.

Good lord! Will this ever stop?

All during this adventure, I complained.

I complained to Fisker.

I complained to the dealership.

I complained to the sales person.

I complained to the people who would marvel at seeing the car when I drove it and ask about it.

I complained to my friends, family, complete strangers, and myself.

I was so frustrated and discouraged that I started looking at other cars, wanting to trade in my Fisker Karma for a car -- any car -- I wouldn't complain about.

Taking my own medicine, I finally stated a new intention, to have the Fisker fixed right once and for all, or to get into a new car that I would love and be issue free.

Then it dawned on me.

My complaining wasn't helping.

At all.

When you add the fact that I am on the board of directors for A Complaint Free World, a movement to stop us all from complaining, I was more than embarrassed.

I decided to start looking for the good in the car. The entire matter might not change, and the car might not become foolproof or fireproof, but I'd feel better.

After all, my complaining wasn't changing anything and it was making me feel terrible.

It was time for a change.

I would never complain about the car again.

A simple but firm decision.

No more complaints.

I had to run some errands right after that awakening. I charged up the car and took off. Everywhere I went, people asked me, "Gorgeous! What is it?"

I'd tell them. But I left off the complaints. I just focused on the 50 miles I can get on a charge, and the 250 more miles I can get with the gas generator making more electric energy. Plus the solar panels on the roof added a couple hundred miles a year. Sweet.

After running all my errands that day, I came home and noticed that I had one mile left on the stored charge. That meant my entire morning of running from place to place never used a drop of gas. I was suddenly proud of my car. I started to think it's pretty cool after all.

I contacted customer service at the Austin dealership to look at a couple final problems with the car. No one called me back for over a month.

What did that mean?

It meant my car didn't need service!

After all, I'm not going to complain!

A friend of mine likes to complain. He defends his choice by saying, "Complaining adds color to life! I like it!"

But I also notice he rarely gets what he wants. And that might be the big insight.

When we complain, we stay focused on the negative. As the Law of Attraction teaches, you tend to get more of what you focus on. As long as I saw the faults in my car, I attracted more of them to see.

Time to break that pattern.

After all, it's all in your perception.

When you stop and rephrase your complaint as a positive intention, you morph your energies into a beacon of light, seeking out the positive.

When I praise my car rather than condemn it, the car seems to work better. And even if that weren't true in some measurable way, I felt better driving it.

The thing is, my feeling better about the car actually seemed to make the car better.

The Fisker dealership in Austin finally called me back, and I took the car in for a software upgrade and service. They kept my car for two weeks, having to order parts and such.

When I went to pick up the car, it looked brand new. They had detailed it and made it look showroom ready. That was incredibly wonderful to see.

They also said every issue I had was resolved. That was a huge relief to hear.

I got in the car, drove it home, and didn't notice any issues.

I had nothing to complain about.

At all.

Weeks have passed now and my car is working flawlessly.

Lesson: My not complaining led to a situation where I have no complaints.

Think about it.

Complaining wasn't helping and made me feel lousy; Complimenting what worked in my car made me feel great and seemed to help the car with its repairs.

The opposite of complaining is complimenting.

I know it sounds impossible and at least unlikely, but the moment I switched from complaining to complimenting my car, always keeping in mind my intention to drive a car that I love, it began to get better. Or maybe I got better first, and that influenced my car. Either way, it's a win.

Before you complain, think of what you really want instead. Then speak your intention rather than your complaint. That simple step will cause you to move in a new and more positive direction. Focusing on complaints keeps you stuck in that lower energy; focusing on your intentions moves you into a higher energy. No one is asking you to overlook poor service or to deny your disappointment, but to instead focus on the service and outcome you actually want. There's a huge difference in how you feel and in the results you get.

Here's the secret:

Before you voice a complaint, stop.

Ask yourself what you really want.

Then voice your intention, not your complaint.

That's the new formula for happy results.

Now don't complain about it.

Who Are THEY?

I'm sure you've heard the expression, "You know what they say?" Who are THEY? I've heard it a hundred times. They say that people should do this or that. Or, they say this is right and that is wrong. They say a lot of stuff but who died and made them boss?

There are no rules that mandate that you have to live by what they say. Of course, they say we should live by the Golden Rule -Do unto others, and I actually have to agree with them this one time. But when it comes to your own personal choices, what do YOU say?

There is no law that says you have to grow up, get married and have children otherwise you won't be happy. But many people seem to believe that to be true. Who says you can't be happy without getting married and having a family?

There is also no law that says just because someone does something one way that their way is right and yours is wrong.

For instance, let's say you're a picky eater. And you're with someone that likes to try all kinds of new and different foods. There you are dining out and you don't want to try the Lizard's Eyes in Champagne Sauce because it just doesn't sound very appetizing to you. Your friend says to you, "Oh, I can't believe you won't try it, you are such a picky eater."

So, who cares if you're a picky eater? (Apparently, they do.) It's not like you're saying to them. "Oh, I can't believe you're going to eat that, you're NOT a picky eater." They say you should try new foods and experience new cuisines. Again, who are they to tell you what to do?

When someone tries to push their opinions on you they act as if there is something wrong with you because you should do it the way THEY think you should. When in reality you are perfect just the way you are with all of your likes, dislikes, habits, little idiosyncrasies and the way you do things is just fine.

I say, "You be you and I'll be me."

If I want to watch T.V. and you don't. Then don't. If you want to eat anything that crosses your path then by all means eat it and Bon Appetit!

But don't try and make me be any different than I am because I like who I am and I'm sorry you don't. And vice versa, you have no business trying to change someone to be who you want them to be because as you probably already know, the only person you can change is you.

Unless someone is hurting you by their behavior or they're abusive on some level; simply let them be who they are. (If they are hurting you, it's time to set boundaries, but that's another issue altogether).

By accepting people with all of their so called faults, if that's what you want to call them, you take the pressure off of you for not liking what they do or don't do and you take it off of them so they can just be who they are. And then everyone is happy!

The truth is that when people let go of judgment, condemnation and criticisms it frees you and them to live in harmony and you know what THEY say, "The truth will set you free."
