Fear Of Failure? Fear Of Success?

Of all the conversations I have facilitated via coaching in the past 10 years it astounds me the amount of people who divulge either one on one or in a seminar format that they have a fear of either failure or success! I personally do not believe as a spiritual being you can fail so do not buy into this belief. It saddens me how many people state this and yet are not present to the costs of where they are resonating.

I heard a fabulous quote last week, and I am sorry I cannot remember the person who wrote this but I feel it sums up what I believe success means - here it is :-

Success should not measured by your achievements alone, it should be measured by the obstacles that you have had to overcome

Logically why would a person in their 30,40,50's continue to language their world by stating they have a fear of failure unless they were committed to sabotaging their reality. Beliefs are almighty powerful and can make or break a dream. If you are interested in transformation and have a fear of failure check out how ludicrous this is!

People rattle it off like ordering a 'flatwhite coffee', no consciousness around how debilitating this belief/fear is. What's crucial is not that you have faltered, it's where you go once you have.

If you beat yourself up, don't. Pick yourself up, and brush yourself off.

Take responsibility for your mistake(s) and make amends where you can.

Forgive yourself and others for slipping-up, it happens along our journey.

Look at what you have, or are learning about yourself or another, or the situation at hand through your mistake. This is so valuable and can make a world of difference.

Sometimes the end result of our errors like loss of a relationship, money, job, etc, doesn't always work out, at the time, for what seems like the best for us but other times, or in the future, our mistake leads us to even greater heights and outcomes than we ever imagined.

Look at your lapse as just that, a lapse of connection. A disconnect from source, from your inner knowingness, from that which is and always is. Now you have an opportunity to reconnect and gain significant knowledge you may not have had if you hadn't made an error.

Your mistakes are for your learning, growth and expansion as a human and spiritual being. It's up to you how and what you do after you make them.

When you are connected to God, or whatever you believe this to be, there is right in our wrongs.

The Hidden Power Of The Compliment

Can you remember the first conversation you had three days ago? How about what you had for dinner a week last Wednesday? No? You wouldn't be alone. However, I bet you could tell me the last time someone gave you a meaningful compliment. I'd be willing to bet that you can remember exactly what the compliment was.

What makes a compliment so memorable? Is it that we have some inbuilt mechanism for remembering compliments? More likely, it's simply their lack of frequency - they are a rare treat. They are also one of the greatest motivational tools available. What was it like last time someone complimented you? Did you feel warm? Happy? Energized? Did you feel encouraged to do more of what is was that provided you with the compliment in the first place?

Regardless of whether this happens at home or work; how easy is it to inject energy and positive motivation into that environment, and give the gift of that warmth, energy and happiness to the people around you? Praise costs nothing, but it is worth its weight in gold. So, if we all have the potential to enrich our homes, workplaces and organizations with this power, why don't we do it more often?

Positive reinforcement is a tactic every parent knows well, because recognizing someone's efforts and achievements is one of the simplest, yet most effective ways to reinforce positive behavior patterns and to empower them. We do it with our kids, subconsciously crave it for ourselves, yet for some reason forget how important it is for others in our lives, too.

You have to be smart about praise, though. Throwing random compliments at everyone isn't going to have the desired effect. Like all worthwhile things in life, you have to put some effort in to make it work. Here are three key rules to follow:

1. Be sincere. We all love praise, but if it isn't sincere, relevant or honest, then it will feel like what it is - false. If your choice of compliment isn't credible, then you won't be, either.

2. Be timely. Just as we punish our children as soon as possible after they do wrong to reinforce what behavior is unacceptable, the same is true of praise - it needs to be at the time the praiseworthy action occurred or as soon as possible afterwards.

3. Be creative. Say things the same way, and they'll quickly lose impact. Innovative methods generate energy, so mix it up and keep it fresh. If you praise someone outside formal channels, it will stick out to them and others more so, rather than keeping compliments for the morning staff meeting, be a little unexpected!

4. Be specific about what the compliment is about. You can't reinforce positive behavior if the person doesn't know what behavior is being reinforced! Instead of 'You did a good job on that presentation', try 'Thanks for your hard work on that presentation. You did some really great research and the additional information you found really brought the subject to life.'

5. Be selective. Don't worry about making people feel 'left out' when you compliment a single member of a team - the point of this sort of specific reinforcement is to be targeted so, if one member of a team stood out, tell them why they caught your attention, rather than just giving a half-hearted thank you to the whole team.

6. Be meaningful. Tailor what you say and how you say it to fit the recipient. Some people are naturally quiet and don't like 'fuss', whereas some people thrive on approval or are more outgoing. These people will love a public pat on the back, whereas others will hate it. When energizing a team member, communicate in a style which fits their own, as it will resonate with them more deeply.

7. Be proactive. After reading this, you may be all fired up with good intentions, but it's the action that counts. Don't forget to speak out, be creative and give out that energy, otherwise all you'll have is a good intention.

- Give someone a handwritten card or notelet. - Leave a small gift on someone's desk - flowers, candy, or a gift certificate. - Put congratulatory messages in the organization's newsletter. - Put a thank you note on a bulletin board.

The crux of the matter is that demonstrating to people that you respect, value and appreciate who they are and what they do unlocks a huge amount of discretionary effort and energy which reverberates through the organization. Fuelling your team on heartfelt, individual and targeted praise is quick, easy and doesn't need to cost a penny. When was the last time you did it? When will the next time be?

Spiritual Awareness and Avoiding The Slippery Slopes In Life

Gizmo was a cute little creature that was discovered and purchased in China-Town. Everything was great until little Gizmo was brought to suburbia. Emerged in the perfect world, the owner got careless, and despite admonitions from the seller. He spilled water on little Gizmo. This created the multiplier effect where little Gizmo gave birth to four other Gizmos. Then, the owner fed the little Gizmos after midnight and all hell broke loose. The cute snuggly, little creatures turned into nasty, ugly, menacing Gremlins that wrecked havoc on the town. They were destroyed by lightness and thrived in the dark.

Everyday, we are warned. We have spiritual text such as the Bible and Odu that guide us through life. We pretty much know right from wrong. However, there are defining moments when our weaknesses get the best of us. We think that it is okay to let things slide. We believe that we can do the wrong thing, just once, and everything will be okay. But our weaknesses have a multiplier effect. We then start to attract people and create experiences that align with the worse parts of our selves. Then things escalate out of control. This results in utter and complete chaos.

Gizmo, as cute and adorable as he was, had the ability to turn into an ugly nasty Gremlin. The movie was not only a reflection of our society, but also a mockery of how we allow bad choices to turn us into monsters. We feel the pain of our choices when our worlds come crashing down. And we are faced with consequences of anarchy, war, and destruction. This is what happens when we are guided by our weaknesses. We gravitate toward the wrong people and situations that wreck havoc on our lives. The secret is to be aware. The Gremlins couldn't survive in the dark and neither can our weaknesses. It is through awareness that allows us to avoid the slippery slope of life.

The Science of Intuition - Part 1

Before commencing to explain the connection between science and intuition let me share the reason for creating the blog The Science of Intuition. How many of you reading this are looking for a better way to live your life so that you have has less angst and greater levels of peace, success and happiness. If you look around you will see many people are out of harmony with their lives. There is a disconnect between what people want in their life and what they have. My theory is that we are all madly running around taking action but not stopping to consider whether it is right action. The real question is why aren't we stopping before we take action to contact our intuitive wisdom. The purpose of these articles is to answer that question. Firstly, we will look at what prevents people from accessing their intuition. Secondly how to move pass these blockages to have intuition available at will.

To begin our exploration we need to look at how science and intuition are connected? My research into neuroscience and how the brain works has shown me that the way the brain is structured makes accessing intuition an unnatural and difficult process.

What is intuition? Intuition can be defined as the act or faculty of knowing or sensing without the use of rational processes. Let's now compare this with how the brain works.

The brain is made up of many tiny brain cells often referred to as neurons. Basically the brain works by neurons connecting with other neurons to form groups. The brain has about 100 billion neurons. To give you an idea of its size if every brain cell or neuron was to equal 1 second then the number of neurons you have would equal 3171 years. This shows us the massive potential and power our brains have, which can either be a blessing or a curse depending on how you understand and use it.

There are many different types of neural connections (groups of neurons) which do different things. For example some look after breathing, others chewing food, walking, learning a language or playing a computer game these are just a few examples. Everything that you do stems from your brain cells or neurons forming connections with each other. For those who like to understand how things work let me give you a quick overview of how neurons work. If this is something that would bore you senseless then please feel free to skip the next paragraph.

All neurons have a cell body which includes a nucleus. Extending out from the cell body are little branches called dendrites. These connect with other brain cells and carry information into the cell body and nucleus. The cell body then sends the information via an electrical current (similar to that of a light bulb) through a string like cable called an axon. The axon string then sends the information out through the axon terminals to other neurons. Axons can vary in length from a fraction of a centimetre to as long as several meters as is the case of the brain sending messages to the toes to move. The axon's terminals can have as many as 10,000 branches spread out towards the dendrites of other neurons. When an electrical impulse reaches an axon terminal it communicates across a tiny gap called a synapse. This is referred to as synaptic firing and this is how brain cells or neurons communicate with one another.

To give you an example when a child learns to walk a group of neurons team up together and communicate with one another by synaptic firing. When the child first starts to walk they usually walk a little and then fall down. However after a while the child learns to walk without falling down or holding onto anything. What is happening in the brain is that a group of neurons are forming so the child can learn to walk. At first because the neurons are not used to working together the child finds that it can only maintain the action for a short period of time. As the neurons get used to teaming up the child begins to walk much more fluidly. The neurons through repeated contact with one are now known as team of neurons that when activated allow the child to walk.

All the child needs to do now is think I would like to go from the lounge room to the bedroom and the body automatically responds. It is the same for everything whether it be learning to drive a car or playing a computer game. At first you have to focus and concentrate on what you are doing but after a while the neurons form a team and you find it happens automatically. To summarise at the beginning of a task/situation you have to consciously think about it but with repeated action teams of neurons form at an unconscious level. Basically everything you do, say, think and feel works like this.

Now comes the interesting part. Every thought that you have is linked to a group of neurons forming a connection. Let's say for example someone has a thought that they can't do something; that life is difficult or money is scarce. Unfortunately the brain doesn't say that's a silly thought it just takes on every thought as if it were true. If you think you can't do something a group of neurons are going to form which will prevent you from being able to do that. Henry ford said it best in his famous quotation 'whether you think you can or you think you can't you are right.' As you are probably aware Henry Ford was responsible for the invention of the T model ford something that his engineers told him on 3 separate occasions was impossible to build. On the 3rd occasion Henry Ford told them not to come back to him until they had figured out how to build it and the rest is history.

It is also important to be aware that in the first six years of life the brain is in a fully hypnotic state. This means that it will literally take on with very little censoring most of the information from its environment. The reason the brain does this is that it is programmed to form lots of neural connections during the early part of life so that you can grow and develop at a rapid rate. Also between the ages of 6-12 the brain is in a semi hypnotic state.

Therefore a child will take on most of what they interact it with during the first 12 years of their life. This includes what they are told, how they are treated and their perception of events. For example someone may have said they were stupid or silly or they couldn't draw and their brains being in a highly suggestible state take that on as being the truth.

The good news is that the brain is very plastic meaning that it has the capacity to form new neural connections and pathways any time someone chooses to do so. To give you an idea of its amazing ability to form connections our brains have the capacity to form hundreds of trillion of neural connections with one another. To understand how vast that is, that number of connections adds up to more than all the grains of sand on all the beaches in the entire world. This gives people the opportunity to do anything that they set their minds to, so they don't have to stay stuck in the past.

What you think determines how you perform and behave. You cannot separate what you think from who you are because who you are comes from your brain. Your brain cannot work until connections are made between neurons. All that you know, all that you are, comes from the way neurons connect and form teams.

Given this we can see that brains work on the premise of repetition, what you focus on and reinforce determines your dominate thinking and behavioural patterns. In order to awaken your intuition you need to move out of your brains rational and structured way of processing information.

It is important to realise that unless people are prepared to step out of the well-worn paths of neural connections and entertain different thoughts then the old established ways of thinking and behaving are going to continue. Even scarier is the fact that because these old ways are primarily unconscious people are usually unaware of their thoughts, behaviours and actions.
