Many people are in bad financial shape these days. This is in no small part to all the crashes that have been happening lately, from stock market crashes to housing crashes to Internet bubbles. These have a terrible effect on the economy, which makes it really hard to get and keep a good job. Most people today are barely keeping their head above water. And the people that are employed are lucky to have a job. One thing that people need to be aware of today that they didn't need to be aware of a couple decades is job security. In today's competitive world, you need to keep your options open at all time. In this article, you'll learn how to choose a good career so you don't get downsized and find yourself out on the street.
The old advice to do something that you love, and the money will come sure sounds nice, but it doesn't always work out that way. Sure, if you are skilled enough to do something that you like that many people will pay you a lot of money for, then you are pretty lucky. Most of us have to choose a job that pays the bills. When it comes to choosing which job to take, we can only try and choose a job that doesn't totally make us depressed.
With that in mind, you can still find things you are good at that aren't completely horrible. Many people find jobs without much thought. They assess their level of skill, and find a job that matches it. But in today's economy, you've got to take it one step further.
And that means you've got to choose a job in an industry that is not likely to suffer a downturn. This can be very difficult. If you asked anybody in the late nineties how the Internet industry was doing, they would have told you that it would last forever, and the world had a reached a new paradigm in terms of economic models. However, this soon proved to be false, as the bottom dropped out and many people lost their jobs.
So what do you do? Find a job, or career, that will always be in demand. Take plumbers for example. No matter how high tech the world becomes, or what kind of economy there will be, the world will always need plumbers. Another job is funeral home directors. During both booms and busts, people will need to be buried.
So the trick then, is to find out what skills you have, and then find some of these "evergreen" jobs that you can apply your skills to. That way, no matter how bad things get, you'll always be in an in demand field. And the more you update your education and qualifications, the more money you'll be able to make.
When you follow this outline, you'll be amazed how easy it is to get on top of things. Good luck, and never give up.
