Shipping Packages Overseas

When we mail letters or packages to people who also live in the United States, we typically know what is expected. Because it's not uncommon to mail items to others within the states, we have done this in the past and know how to package and label items that need to be mailed. Also, if we run into problems, we can always call or visit the local post office to get more information. Delivering items within the states is typically standard procedure when you live there.

Mailing internationally, however, can be more of a challenge. It can be difficult to know how to ship things correctly because other countries have their own regulations. When shipping overseas, it's always a good idea to check with qualified shipping companies so that your items won't be declined, returned to you or lost.

Some countries are extremely particular about what they will allow from foreign places. While most items are acceptable, be sure to check and bear in mind that alcohol, prescription drugs, weapons, chemicals and hazardous materials are never allowed. If you are unsure, be sure to check first.

If you are mailing packages, they need to be in sturdy boxes. All items should be wrapped carefully and any extra spaces inside the box should be filled with padding of some sort. Shipments that go internationally often change carriers quite frequently throughout the route Therefore, the chances of loss or damage is definitely increased. You should seal the box with strong shipping tape and secure all seams with the tape as well.

A label should be placed on two sides of the box that show both the forwarding and return addresses. In addition, place a label inside the box in case the outside labels should fall off. These boxes are often placed on skids and they can get knocked around a bit. It's also best to use waterproof ink in case of moisture. The package should be addressed to a specific person and the destination country should be clearly marked. This may help prevent the package from getting lost while transported.

Many shipping companies now have tracking numbers that can be checked online. Once you visit the website of the shipping company, you can easily enter the tracking number online. From there, you can learn when the item went out, where it is currently located and an estimated delivery date.

It's good to let the recipient know the approximate date of delivery so they will be expecting the package. They may have to pick the item up at their postal service area so they can sign and claim the package. They need to let you know when they receive the package as well as the condition of the items after the box is opened so you can know that there was no damage.

It isn't difficult to mail packages overseas, but do remember that there is a different set of regulations that must be considered. Once you have gone through the process one or two times, you will know exactly how to proceed. Take your time preparing your packages, double-check the address and before you know it, you will be able to ship internationally without a second thought!
