Seeking Fulfillment By Having A Job

How often do we hear of people who feel empty because their pockets are empty? With the ongoing worldwide recession, thousands of people are struggling through this situation. No matter how much we deny it, it is extremely difficult to move around when you don't have money - because you will have no means to buy the basics - food, clothing and shelter.

When people lose their jobs, an inexplicable sense of loss overcomes them - they fall into despair, thinking that life is difficult to get through without the proper means. This is all too true - so how does one's profession/job affect his/her ability to acquire fulfilment in life?

SELF-ESTEEM. A person develops self-belief by having a job. He/she develops feelings of self-worth and a perception that their lives are essential to the lives of the people around them. Their decisions suddenly determine the decisions of others. How flattering does it feel when you know you helped your company achieve its goals? You may be a meagre employee, but you know your efforts are important in order to achieve the company's objectives. Self-esteem is that feeling of importance you get when you know you are not a burden to society.

ABILITY TO EARN. Have you been eating out of the pockets of your parents or spouse during the time you were unemployed? Well, the most obvious effect on life fulfilment is the ability to purchase or pay for things borne out of your sweat and sacrifice. They is no dignity in being a "forever charity case." Your ability to survive on your own, to support yourself, and not have to rely on others to live is one of the best ways to achieve life fulfilment.

SELF-FULFILLMENT. After years of education, training and practice, you become ready to follow your dreams and fulfill your destiny. A job provides the means for you to do so. If you are a great artist, your talents and knowledge may be used for a job in the advertising or the arts. If you work at a job you know you love doing, then you feel fulfilled. Your dreams are coming true. Sitting around in front of the TV and not working will never give you the fulfilment you seek. You have to be a positive force in the lives of others in order to achieve fulfilment.

A CHANCE TO MEET PEOPLE. Men are created as social beings - we are meant to interact with other people. Even if you work in the comfort of your homes and sit in front of a monitor, or earn by calling up people, you get the chance to share ideas with others. Meeting new people enhances a person's well-being. You become important in the lives of the people you meet - providing something they need, while giving you the chance to share ideas, inputs and experiences.

SELF-PRIDE. Just the thought of being able to introduce yourself to people as the "manager" or "secretary" of a company gives one pride - rather than introducing yourself as a "bum" or "house helper." There's dignity in labour - it's like a badge of honour you can be proud of displaying to anyone or everyone who bothers to ask.

So the next time you think about resigning "just because" - think twice. Here are thousands of people in the world who are not as lucky as you are. Enjoy the pride of having a job - it's one of the ways for you to achieve fulfilment in life.
