When it comes to changing habits most people think of really big things like losing weight, exercising more or stop smoking. But just changing your habit of how you approach things can have a dramatic effect on your life.
Approaching situations with the end in mind and a willingness to be flexible in your implementation will mean more accomplishment into your life. "Speeding Up Your Learning Experience" will allow you minimize procrastination and increase productivity. It will also allow you to discover what you are really committed to achieving. In the rest of this article we will take a look at ...
What Is The Learning Experience?
Webster defines learning as:
"The acquisition of knowledge or skills through experience, practice, or study, or by being taught."
Sounds simple right? But it seems that as we get older the less likely we are to put ourselves in learning situations. Because to learn something means we have to fail at it first. The "learning experience" is the corrective thinking and then action we apply to get it right.
Let me illustrate this point with an example:
This will not apply to you if you were born with a deformity or have had an accident that prevents you from using your legs. But even then you should be able to follow along. Most of us as adults know how to walk. What we have forgotten is as babies we did not know how to walk. We kept at it until we got it right. That means we tried a myriad of ways to stand up and walk. But over 99% of them were dead WRONG! But we kept trying anyway because we wanted to walk and didn't care about the in between stuff.
Do you see the lesson here?
"Speeding Up Your Learning Experiences" Action Steps
Step 1) Understand that failure is a natural way of life.
Step 2) Decide on the outcome and the price we are willing to pay. (time, effort, finances)
Step 3) Find a way to objectively measure progress. (goals, milestones, activities)
Step 4) Start as soon as possible.
Step 5) Measure progress along the way. If your actions are working keep doing them. If not then change your approach.
Step 6) Continue until you reach your outcome.
Before you get started it is really important that you spend time making sure you are clear about what the outcome means to you. A quick and introspective way to do this is to ask yourself two questions.
Q1) How will achieving this outcome affect my life? (i.e. emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically, relationships and etc.)
Q2) How will not achieving this outcome affect my life? (i.e. emotionally, mentally, spiritually, physically, relationships and etc.)
Don't rush through this exercise. Spend some time with this knowing that this pre-planning can save you a lot of time.
If after doing this exercise you can't come up with enough reasons WHY you should proceed with an idea then I would seriously look at doing something else that does have the reasons WHY.
Implementation Problems
Issue #1
When it comes to implementing the steps above we have noticed that a lot of people get hung up on deciding what to go after first.
Solution #1
Of course we have already given an exercise you can use to decide if a specific outcome is worth your time and energy. However, this doesn't really help you if you have a number of things vying for your time and energy.
In that case we think you should use a divide and conquer exercise. The way this works is as follows:
Step 1) Create a list of outcomes you want to achieve.
Step 2) Segment this list into groups of seven.
Step 3) For each group prioritize the outcomes against the other entries in that specific group.
Step 4) Now eliminate the bottom three from each group.
Step 5) For each group prioritize the outcomes against the other entries in that specific group.
Step 6) Now eliminate the bottom three from each group.
Step 7) Combine all of the remaining entries.
Step 8) Prioritize this list. Your answer will be the one you feel strongest about.
In this article we have looked at how to decide if an outcome has enough WHY reasons in order for you to pursue it and how to deal with more then one outcome vying for your attention. By actually implementing this you can minimize procrastination and increase productivity. This means you will have a greater ability to move toward your dreams today. The techniques we have looked at in this article will work best for outcomes that you are able to determine the price you are willing to pay to achieve them. They will be less effective if you are not willing or able to commit to the price you will pay for achievement.
