Graduation the culmination of years of hard work. The excitement that comes with graduating is memorable, and graduates should take some time to celebrate. Eventually, however, graduates will need to move on to the next stage of their lives and look for a job.

Here are a few tips to help graduates land the best job for them:

Appearance Matters

At most universities, there is no dress code. Students can wear slippers to class if they want, and a shaggy beard or wild hair will not lead to problems. The job world, however, is quite different; prospective employers may look elsewhere is a potential job candidate looks unkempt. Graduates are encouraged to save their unconventional style for the evening or weekend.

Develop Interview Skills

Some people seem to be natural communicators, and they tend to do well in interviews. Many of the best speakers and orators, however, confess that they spend much of their time improving their communication skills. While some people are better at interviewing than others, a bit of dedicated practice can make a tremendous difference. New graduates can even form a group of fellow graduates and run practice interviews with each other.

Network

The best jobs are not always posted on websites and in newspapers. Many of the best jobs for new graduates are found through friends, family members and professional contacts. New graduates should keep in touch with their contacts from university and inquire about any possible job openings. There are also social functions for a variety of business fields; by attending these groups, shaking hands and exchanging phone numbers, a graduate might make contact with someone who can help him or her find a great job.

Social Media

One of the biggest draws to hiring recent graduates is their aptitude with social media and other online tools. New graduates should demonstrate their competence with social media by creating attractive social media properties to include on their resumes. In addition, it may be wise to remove information referring to politics, religion or other topics that might be deemed controversial.

Legal Issues

After graduating, it is important to read up on relevant employment law to understand one's rights in the workplace. Unethical employers might try to take advantage of graduates' inexperience to hire them at a lower rate of pay. Anything that seems controversial that comes up in the hiring process should be discussed with lawyers with relevant experience.
