Lessons From America's Army

Copyright (c) 2012 Scott F Paradis

America's armed forces are the instruments of this great nation, conceived in liberty and forged in the furnace of adversity, specifically designed and intended to address the two most influential elements of the human condition: power and fear. The Army's mission is to fight and win the nation's wars. As the world's premier ground combat force, the United States Army engages enemy forces wherever and whenever circumstances demand. The Army employs national power through the force of arms and the imagination and will of industrious soldiers. The Army manipulates and manages power to achieve national goals - objectives determined by political leadership at the behest of citizens of the United States - a responsibility all Americans bear.

To accomplish perilous tasks in austere, demanding, and often dangerous environments America's Army must control, suppress, and manage the innate human tendency to fear. The primal instinct, to preserve one's life and one's standing, is a luxury which in combat soldiers subordinate to team and cause - a greater good. Seeking to preserve one's life in the face of a daunting challenge might unwittingly risk the ultimate treasure: ensuring the lives, the liberty, and the happiness of the people soldiers serve.

Freedom is not free and prosperity does not issue forth without first exacting a price. The men and women who serve in America's Army are willing to discipline themselves and sacrifice all. They toil; they stand guard; they risk everything so that others might enjoy full and prosperous lives - lives free from threat, intimidation, and fear. Soldiers do the nation's bidding under the most extreme conditions. They depend upon each other, they support each other, and if need be, they suffer and bear the gravest of burdens.

America's Army has built a legacy of achievement through the dedication and sacrifice of countless men and women. American soldiers have defeated foes, won the peace, and secured the future by overcoming fear, advancing in the face of overwhelming obstacles and employing power in a measure necessary to the task. Power and fear are the domain of warriors, diplomats, and heroes - the province of America's soldiers.

Soldiers' courage and loyalty, duty and honor, selfless service and sacrifice offer varied and vast lessons. Every man and woman who has worn the uniform of this nation has a tale to tell, a tale of commitment, of trial, of overcoming adversity. These hard-won lessons apply to circumstances far removed from the battlefield - these lessons apply just as well to business and life.

Winning - succeeding - whether in battle, in business or in life, are not so different. The principles are the same; only the conditions vary. In the field, on the precipice of battle, there is no mistaking the risks. The soldier is all in. In business and in everyday life people tend to think and act with less gravity. The truth is, however, the stakes are the same - life hangs in the balance.

Learn the lessons millions of American soldiers have sacrificed their lives to teach. Live a life of fealty to principles of the highest order. Embrace each day as the adventure it is. Make the most of your life; focus on what matters, and through your commitment and sacrifice bring joy and happiness to those you share your life with, those you encounter, those you serve.

A soldier's life is ordered, disciplined, and measured, but for a purpose. He or she must be willing to suppress ego and advance under the very threat of death. Your task in this life is no different. Proceed.
