Losing two pounds in a week is a much easier goal to think of than losing a hundred pounds in a year.
Of course, you won't hit your short term goals all the time. Figure two steps forward, and one step back, and you're doing just fine. So maybe shift your target of a hundred pounds to a year and a half. After all, as soon as you achieve that goal, you're going to want to set and achieve another one. No sense making life hard and frustrating. Just go at slow enough pace so it's easy to do, and just enough to measure progress every couple weeks.
No matter what kind of goal you are going after, you are going to need to read information and learn things about it. Spend at least an hour every couple weeks researching your goal and finding different ways to achieve it. Of course, after you start to notice some small progress, you'll be super motivated to learn more, so you'll likely be spending a lot more than an hour a week.
The best thing you can do is tell as many people as you can about your goal. That way, you'll feel accountable. Studies have shown that people who tell their friends and family they are going to quit smoking by a certain day have a much larger success rate than people who try to quit on their own without telling anybody.
Maxwell Maltz, the author of "Psycho Cybernetics" was a huge fan of what he called, "the theater of the mind." This when you imagine yourself achieving your goal. When you picture yourself achieving your goal, and give yourself a lot of positive emotional reinforcement, it gives your subconscious a target to shoot for. This makes it a lot easier. Some people who spend a lot of time visualizing say that achieving goals this way is almost automatic.
Following these simple steps can really help you to achieve almost any goal. Just pick one that fires you up, break it down into small chunks, and take small steps every day in the direction of your goal. You'll get there before you know it.
