Most of us struggle our whole lives to find out who we really are. We grow up with so much potential, and then spend a long time having all kinds of ideas and beliefs drilled into us as we go through school. When we become adults, it's frightening to realize that all of the ideas we have may not be our own. Most people don't even question their beliefs. They'll defend them with every ounce of energy they have. The fact you are reading this article means that you have started to realize that there's more to you than what you've been told. And perhaps you're ready to find out who you really are.
One way to do this is to think about what you'd like to create in life. This, of course, will reveal your true nature and personality. Take some time to think in terms of what you want, rather than what other people want for you. If you were transported to another country where you didn't know anybody, and you had a steady stream of income, what would you want? What skills would you like to develop? What kind of services would you like to provide for others?
Taking some time to do this can reveal your true character. The things you are naturally drawn to, despite your upbringing and background are powerful clues to who you really are. The more you take steps to bring out these talents, the more you'll reveal your true self.
Once you've got something picked out, start to develop these talents along these lines. A person's character and personality are made up of many things. But since we are social creatures, how you'd like to serve others gives great insight into your nature. Start to develop skills that will serve you to this end. They can be large skills that can take years to develop, or they can be smaller skills that you can develop in a couple weeks, or even during a weekend seminar.
Listen to your thoughts when you are alone. Release all the teachings of the past, and all the demands that others place on you. This may take a while to do, but it's well worth it. Sit alone and just listen to your thoughts. When all those other voices quiet down, what's left? What thoughts enter into your mind during those times? Where are they leading you? How do they inspire you? What do they make you yearn for? Listen carefully, for you will be amazed what you hear.
These simple steps are just the tip of the iceberg. The more you practice them, the further down the road of self discover you'll go. So long as you never give up, you'll be more and more genuine to yourself with each and every day.
