Why Looking Out For Number One Is An Effective Strategy

Most people are loathe to admit that they are selfish. Being selfish is something that is considered bad, rude, and even somewhat evil. But the truth is that all people are selfish most of the time. Even people who spend their lives helping out other people are doing so for their own motivations. Of course, from a psychological point of view this can get fairly complicated. But most people would agree that while helping out others is a noble and worthy goal, if you spend too much time helping out others and let your own needs fall by the wayside, you won't last very long. In this article, you'll learn about some basic tips that can help you look out for number one without feeling like an anti-social selfish villain.

No matter how busy your schedule is, you should spend at least an hour a day doing something just for you. Escape into your room and listen to music, or take a drive by yourself and get an ice cream, anything that you like. The point is to forget about other people for once and focus on yourself for a small amount of time each and every day.

Having a hobby is a great way to give yourself some personal time. Everybody respects hobbies, so when you tell people you've got some hobby work to do, they'll give you your space. Choose something that will be interesting, and that you can spend some time on a few hours a week. Many people quickly realize that having a hobby is a great time for self reflection.

Going out in nature is a wonderful way to spend some time alone with your thoughts. Being in nature, even if it's a park surrounded by a concrete jungle is a wonderful way to give balance to your life.

You've got to have some things you'd like to achieve in life. Things that you would be happy if you accomplished. Make a list of such items, and then prioritize them. If you spend a few hours a week moving closer to your goals, you'll do a lot to increase your self esteem.

When you set your goals, make sure they are both long term and short term. Having long term goals, of a year or more, can help give your life that big picture sense to it. Once these goals are set, then break them down into smaller and smaller goals. That way you'll feel like you're making real progress on a daily basis.

Meditation is also a great way to spend some alone time. Unless you are spending ten hours a day humming under a Bodi tree, people will give you your space. Sit alone in a quiet room, and follow your breath in and out. Release any thoughts that come up, and just keep focusing on your breath. You'll be amazed how much better this makes you feel.

When you choose just a couple of these ideas, you'll be flabbergasted how quickly they can amazingly transform your life. Just pick a couple that sound interesting, and keep doing them until they become an end unto themselves. Then you'll know you are on the path to enlightenment.
