Counselling is a method or manner of assistance and guidance between a counselor and client to help resolve personal, social and even psychological problems and challenges. The goal of counseling is not to impose solutions to a problem but allow the ones concerned to analyze and discover solutions for themselves. People in any given conditions counsel one another according to the concerns and needs of those around them. Although it's not done in a structured or patterned manner, counseling in these types of settings are done out of concern and love for the one involved.
Recurring problems, issues and psychological disorders often need counselling in a more organized level where a specialist or therapist will assist the ailing person. These counselling sessions are monitored over time to identify the progress or improvement of the one seeking help. A concrete example of a problem that requires counseling is drug and alcohol abuse. Those who experience addiction usually don't have the ability to control their cravings on their own unless treatment is sought from skilled professionals. Counseling in this kind of scenario may be done voluntarily by the abuser or it may be done as mandated by law. These compulsory counselling sessions are based on court sentences where the convicted person is placed under rehabilitation requirement instead of going to prison. Drug addiction counseling involves thorough assessment of an individual based on criteria set by addiction counselors working in drug treatment centers.
Addiction counselors work with the individual in a personalized level of approach. Some of those who seek treatment may be given the option to do so in an outpatient manner. This means that the individual is not confined in a facility to get treatment but will only come 1-2 times a month to participate in counseling sessions which may either be done one-on-one or by group. The addiction counselor will be the one to assess the patient and discusses with him the options he may take in the whole treatment process. The aim is to help the patient overcome addiction. According to study, the mode or approach of treatment is not as important to the results unless the counselor also is engaging in the whole process of treatment. Genuine concern and consistency on the desired behaviour must be exhibited by a counselor.
When searching for treatment, getting to know the counselor is equally important. There are a number of drug rehabilitation programs that have wonderful personnel but don't necessarily match a client's personality. Getting adequate information before considering treatment is advised to prevent any undesirable experiences in treatment. Counselling is a big aspect in therapy and better success of the therapy can be achieved when there is good relationship between counselor and client.
