How often have you encountered obstacles or challenges in your life and wondered how the hell you were going to get around them? They almost seemed or appeared to be these big walls that could not be overcome. I would say that majority of the time, all of us actually feel this way about life - to a certain degree. Every time something happens in our lives that doesn't go according to plan, we immediately turn that little molehill into a mountain and think of the worst. It's human nature to do so but that doesn't necessarily mean we have to fall victim to this pattern altogether. There is always a way around what stands right in front of you.
I went to a Tony Robbins seminar once and watched him explore this concept on stage with an audience member. He gave this person a book and told him that he could only hold it between his left thumb and index finger. He wasn't allowed to drop it and he had to follow Tony's instructions to the letter. While this was happening, Tony was holding a giant water gun and threatened to shoot him with it if he made an error. He instructed this guy to put the book into his right hand without passing it across from his left hand and he wasn't allowed to drop it on the floor. The guy put the book in his mouth and passed it to his right hand without dropping it. The instructions were different each time, with the added threat of being hosed with the water gun. For every challenge that was set before him, the guy found a way to pass this book to his right hand without error. The reason I'm sharing this story is because there are so many ways and options to overcome the challenges or obstacles that stand before you. We tend to become quite linear when we're faced with a problem and only see one way. When we get put in a position, like the guy on stage at the Tony Robbins seminar, we look outside the box and create different opportunities.
I recently got stuck in a traffic jam, with my fiancé, on the way home from a shopping trip. There was an accident just before a bridge that crosses over a river. The road was closed and traffic was diverted and this was the only way across. Initially I sat there, like most of us tend to do, saying that there was no other way. I believed and felt that we had to stay stuck and not find another solution. After about 45 minutes of being trapped, bumper to bumper, I got fed up,turned off the main road and looked for another way. Sure enough, there was alternate route. It would take us a bit longer to get home, but at least we'd be moving forward rather than standing still. We bypassed all that traffic and made it home earlier than expected. This was an awesome achievement. I recognised how I initially submitted to the story I was telling myself, but then pushed myself outside my comfort zone, into the unknown and became a problem solver.
There are always more ways than one to get to our destinations in life. We will always be faced with challenges, like the above examples, but there will always be ways to overcome them, get around them and solve them. It is scary to go into the unknown, especially when you're unaccustomed to it but the rewards of taking those risks are definitely worth it. Push yourself when you feel stuck to look for another way, to find another way and to give yourself permission to take a different route.
