Life Coaching Sessions - What Do You Do During One?

Maybe you've thought about finding a life coach. Maybe you've wondered if life coaching can really help you. If you're sorting through all these "maybes", you probably have one big question - what exactly do you do during a life coaching session?

Unlike psychotherapy sessions, life coaching doesn't involve lying on a couch, talking about your feelings and past experiences. Instead, life coaches help you come up with a plan to move forward and make positive changes in your life.

Life coaching sessions can be done in person, over the phone, or even via the internet. The method you choose will depend on the life coach you're working with. Typically, each session will last 30-60 minutes and you can expect to have a session once each week.

Other than that, life coaching sessions can vary widely. There's no "set process" every life coach uses for every client. Your sessions will be tailored to your specifications and your personality. And, the tone of the sessions can change as you move along. If you develop and evolve a little differently or at a different pace than your life coach originally thought, your sessions can be tweaked.

When you start your life coaching, you'll begin by talking about what's important to you and what you're trying to accomplish by working with a coach in the first place. Your life coach will then look at things that could be standing in your way. Then, the two of you will come up with a plan to overcome those issues and move forward.

For example, you might seek out a life coach because you're discouraged you're the only one of your siblings that isn't married yet. You and your life coach will look at the reasons why. Maybe you spend too much time at work. Maybe you're afraid to talk to new people. Whatever the reason is, you'll come up with a plan to change things - like joining organizations where you can meet like-minded people, going to professional mixers, or skipping overtime at the office once a week to go to happy hour with your single friends.

Once you've come up with a plan, your life coach will nudge you along, giving you encouragement and support when you need it. However, the real change is up to you. Life coaches aren't going to just tell you what to do. The goal is to draw out your potential and your independence - instead of being a puppet that just follows a life coach's instructions. In fact, a big part of the transformation in life coaching is to help you figure things out for yourself, so you can approach life with a new confidence and new vigor.
