Job hunting is harder than ever. If you've been in the job market recently, it ain't pretty. There's tons of applicants for every position. This means you've really got to stand out. Walking into a room filled with twenty other people all gunning for the same job you are doesn't give you that happy feeling. However, with some helpful information, and the right attitude, you can easily give yourself an edge.
The first thing is to realize that you only have to be one percent better than the best person in the room. And when you look at all the people, they are likely just as nervous and worried as you. Remember, this is a cut-throat, dog eat dog situation. Only one person is going to get that job, so keep your love-thy-neighbor attitude at the door.
Find what you think is the best candidate, and sit near them. Strike up a conversation. You're going to do some investigation. Ask him or her what they experience is. Tell them you aren't sure you are going to get the job. Find out why they think they are qualified. Chances are this will do two things. One is it will give you some ideas on what to say in the interview. Another is that it will let you know that most people are in the same situation that you are in: Broke and desperate.
When you talk to the interviewer, make sure to be confident. Let them know you've got skills they can use. Remember, they aren't a charity who is handing out free jobs to people. They are in the business of making money. You've got to convince them that you can help them do that. Do this and you're golden.
How do you do this? Give them plenty of examples of how you've succeeded in the past. They are looking for somebody who can learn their way of doing things and get along well with others. They aren't looking for somebody who will insist on doing things their own way, and fight with other employees.
Tell them stories of how quickly you learn. Give them plenty examples of how easily you get along with others. Tell them how you understand the economy is tough. Show them you really get how they are struggling to make a profit. Let them know in no uncertain terms that if they hire you, it will be a net benefit to the company. Do this, and you'll have a good chance of getting the job.
