How to Match Men's Shirts to the Suit

Sometimes, putting together the different elements of men's fashion to form a completed outfit can be a complex process. Many men aren't quite sure of how to select designer jeans, how a suit should fit, what kinds of shoes they should wear or how to match men's shirts to the suits.

Unlike an outfit for a woman, men's fashion and more specifically men's suits are typically only found in a handful of different shades, in either solid or pinstripes. Even with the limited color scheme, it can be quite difficult trying to match men's shirts to the suit if you don't know what elements are important and what you should be looking for. Men's shirts differ from the suits, in that they come in virtually every color under the sun and in a plethora of different designs.

Some sources of information will tell you to choose men's suits before any other element, while others will suggest selecting the ties first. Whichever theory you want to subscribe to is fine, just be sure to take the steps to match all of the different elements of the wardrobe appropriately. If you're really a novice and have that lost at sea feeling about the whole process, consider choosing white men's shirts for the most part. With white men's shirts, you can wear virtually any color of suit or tie and all will be well with the world. It's when you get into the other colors of men's shirts that the matching problems start.

Once you get into colored men's shirts, stick with solid colors to keep it simple. Try to keep the shade and tone of men's shirts in the same family of the color of the suit. As an example, avoid using a bright green shirt with a navy suit. Striped men's shirts can cause their own headache, and while they can match nicely with many different suits, if you aren't sure it's best to stick to the solids. Unless you have some expert help, it's always best to keep it simple with men's shirts and suits, because getting adventurous without the necessary knowledge is only going to create a piece of men's fashion that really doesn't work.

The tie you choose is also an important aspect of matching men's shirts to the rest of the outfit. At some point in the day, you may peel off the jacket, but the shirt and tie will be together the whole way. Try to choose a tie that contains some aspect, which has the main color of the men's shirt in it. As an example, if you are wearing a dark green suit and a men's shirt with dark green stripes, pick a tie that has some dark green elements to match the whole package. If you have the desire to express your individuality in men's fashion, the tie is usually the place to do it. It's okay for the tie to stand out a little from men's shirts and suits, as long as everything matches and the outfit looks complete.
