3 Quick Ways To Kick Depression

Depression is wildly over-diagnosed today. You have so many people who are medicated and do not need to be, they simply wanted a quick fix and didn't know how to find one on their own. I understand that true depression is a chemical condition and must be treated but, for many people, simply doing one of these three things when they felt they were "depressed" would kick what they thought was depression instantly.

Calling a friend
I know—when you feel depressed, you think "the last thing I want to do is burden a friend with this. They don't need to hear about my issues. I'm not fun to talk to right now." But, really, a lot of feeling depressed is being too in your own head. We forget how quickly just speaking to someone else can get us out of our head. The second your friend picks up that phone, they will have stories to tell. They will have issues they may need advice on and you will need to listen (therein forgetting about your feelings of depression) so that you can actually try and come up with a solution for them. They may even have some problems of their own that will make you think "wow, I really don't have it that bad. I should be so happy to lead the life I lead." I know it's hard to push through that feeling of "I just want to be alone" but just dial that phone number—you'll be amazed at how quickly your feelings change.

Playing music
Sometimes we confuse loneliness or boredom for depression. Once again, both of those feelings (lonely and bored) can drive us to be too in our heads. When this happens, play some music. Force yourself to engage and get out of your head by singing along. This is just for the purpose of bringing a different mood into the room (something music is great at doing) and engaging in something rather than just sitting there and thinking. The funny thing is, doing this enough inspired me to look up a singing instructor and get some singing lessons for myself!

Working out
When you feel depressed, this can truly be the hardest thing to do. Why? Because feelings of depression often go hand in hand with feelings of lethargy. But, do the tough thing and get up off that couch. Tie those runners shoe laces one by one and just take that first step out the door. Jog. Go to the gym. Walk on the beach, through your neighborhood, through the city, or to a park. Something about that action—of keeping your body moving—pushes away feelings of depression. It also gets your endorphins (your happy chemicals) pumping!
