3 Tips When Writing Affirmations

Sometimes people need some constant prodding in order to remind themselves that they can accomplish something. The act of reminding yourself of what you are capable of, what you want to achieve, or of what you want to happen is called affirmation. If these are optimistic affirmations, then they're called positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations boost self confidence and help you persist beyond all the trials. They can be about wealth, success, health, relationships, or self-esteem.

It wouldn't make sense to remind yourself what you can't do, or how poor you are at something, so we're not talking about any "negative affirmations" here. The term alone sounds ironic.

So how to you write effective positive affirmations? Here are 3 main tips.

Make them relevant to you. If you want results, then positive affirmations must be for your benefit. No, it's not being selfish - you're just being realistic. It's your life, your dreams and aspirations… so they must be developed by you, and based on your known personal need. You must feel that you really want these things in your life for these affirmations to be sincere. Take them in, allow them to envelop your entire psyche. Remember the saying - "If you believe you can, then you will. If you believe you can't then you won't." Repeat them to yourself, and visualize yourself enjoying what you wanted affirmation for.

Make them present tense, positive, short and clear. Start statements with "I am…" and NOT "I will be…" Do not affirm that you will do something in the future - make it right now. Convince your whole self that they will happen NOW - not tomorrow or next week. This is important so that you act on them right now, too. The more you postpone something, the higher the chances that distractions will prevent you from accomplishing them. Have absolutely no doubt. Make them positive - Say "I am thin" rather than "I am not fat." Lastly, make them short and clear. State you deepest aspirations and desires and word them in one very short statement - no commas, ifs or buts. Make them direct-to-the-point.

Follow-up with action. Uhh, remember the man who convinced himself that he will win the lottery but never bought a ticket? Haha, may sound ridiculous, but oftentimes, people expect to get something but never lift a finger to work on it. No matter how many times you say an affirmation, if you don't follow up with action, then that's like defeating the purpose. Repeat the affirmations to yourself several times in the day, and say them with conviction. Believe that they will happen, so that your entire body and mind follows suit and believes (and acts) according to your affirmation. Have faith.
