Becoming A Tree Surgeon

Ever wanted to become a tree surgeon? Ever wondered how you might get the chance to have such an interesting job? Well this article is for you as we outline some of the things you need in order to become a tree surgeon.

Qualifications

You may (or may not) be surprised to learn that you need to be qualified in order to become a tree surgeon and that not anyone can do it. If you want the ability to work with tools then a Level 1 in NPTC or SSTS is exactly what you need. A Level 2 qualification means that you can be self-employed or are allowed to climb up into the trees to carry out the work. If you wish to take your tree surgery a step further, however, you'll need a Level 3. Level 3s are required if you want to be a foreman or a supervisor. It means that you can either run your own company or take a senior position in somebody else's company.

Natural Aptitudes

Like most jobs, just because you have the qualifications doesn't mean that you'll necessarily be able to do it. Obviously an interest in trees and a good head for heights are very important for any aspiring tree surgeon, as is the acceptance that you could be working in any type of weather. Indeed, with trees often getting blown over in windy conditions there's a reasonable chance that when you are called out it is because of what the weather has done. You also need to have a decent working understanding of who has the responsibility of a tree if it's in disputed land and also of conservation laws in general.

Training

While once you have qualified and have enough experience in tree surgery you might not necessarily need to train further, as with all jobs it's often a good idea to continue to learn so that you are able to give the best to either your employer or your client. Indeed, if you continue to learn throughout your career you are much more likely to be an asset to your company and therefor more likely to get pay rises or keep your job if cutbacks are necessary at your firm.

As you can see there are plenty of things that one needs to do in order to become a tree surgeon. It is, after all, a specialist job that isn't for everyone.
