Choosing The Right Education

There's plenty of mythology going around about getting a higher education. There's been a myth, perhaps created by the student loan companies, that getting a college degree, any college degree is your golden ticket to riches and a fantastic job that you'll love. Unfortunately, this is far from the case.

First, let's take a look at the whole concept of employment. Companies make things. They sell those things to other people, or other companies. If they sell a lot of them, they'll be successful. If you work for a successful company, and help them to create things they can sell to other people, you'll have a good job.

So when choosing a course of study, it's always a good idea to see if that degree is marketable or not. For example, let's say you got a degree in horse and buggy design just as Henry Ford was rolling out his Model-T. Do you think you'd get a good job at a big company that was selling horse drawn carriages? Probably not.

Similarly, in today's marketplace, some jobs are required, some jobs aren't. Just because you have a four year degree doesn't really mean anything. You've got to ask yourself this hard question: "Will my degree help many companies make products that are in demand today?" For example, the Internet is absolutely killing the print industry. Newspapers, traditional publishers are going out of business right and left. So if you were to study publishing, that might not be a good idea. After all, with so many traditional publishers going out of business, who do you expect will hire you with a degree in publishing?

This is a difficult pill to swallow for many people. They were that any degree was good. They borrowed some money, studied something that was interesting, and easy, and are now finding that their degrees are worthless. The truth is that had these people done any kind of market research, they should have figured out that they wouldn't have been able to get a job.

So that's what you should do before choosing a course of study. Imagine you have that degree right now. Make up a fake resume, and send it out to a bunch of companies and see how many call backs you get. If you get plenty of call backs looking to hire a person with your imaginary degree, then that's probably a good choice. However, if you don't hear anything after sending out a couple hundred resumes, you know you shouldn't be wasting your time.
