There are many no-nos in personal goal setting. Just like in playing a game, you need to know the taboos and make sure you never do them. Otherwise you will never win.
The following are some of the things you should not do when you are setting personal goals.
1. Starting Your Personal Goal Setting with Fear.
We humans tend to not do the things we are scared of doing. Feeling scared is not completely bad, unless you let it block your way to success. Fear is normal. However, you need to do something that would help you overcome such feeling. If you begin your goal setting with fear and continue on nourishing it, it will forever hold you from reaching your goals. Learn how to convert that feeling into something worthwhile. Perhaps, you can use that fear to challenge or even motivate yourself. You need to face your fears if you want to accomplish something.
2. Doubting Yourself.
Doubting yourself is like signing your ticket to failure. It is also used an an excuse for not doing something. You need to learn how to cultivate confidence. You need to believe in your knowledge, skills, and capabilities. If in reality, these things are inadequate then do something to increase and make them better. Read related books so your knowledge will increase. Hone your skills. Learn some new things that would be helpful in achieving your goals.
3. Not Alloting Time for Visualizing Your Goals.
Visualizing can help your subconscious mind be programmed to achieve what you want to achieve. Our subconscious mind is very powerful. It is the principle behind NLP or Neuro Linguistic Programming. NLP in simpler terms means bringing into life or putting into action whatever you think of. If you can visualize yourself working on and getting your goals, you would most likely be successful in this endeavour. Visualization can help you shift your focus on the things you want in life. Also, it can increase your energy which will lead to a more motivated you.
4. Not Reviewing Your Past Failures.
Failures can be used in a good way. They can teach you many things about yourself, the people around you, and the world. When you review your failures, you can figure out your weaknesses. And knowing your weak spots can help you avoid them and think of ways to strengthen them. It is good to review your goals you have not achieved so you can evaluate the things that went wrong and determine the mistakes you may have committed. This way, your chances of repeating the same errors will be greatly reduced or totally iradicated.
