Why Managers Need Leadership Skills

Leadership qualities and skills are necessary for all managers to have. Each individual is unique and a team of people having unique traits and characteristics is not easy to manage if you don't have essential leadership skills to bring them all together to work for the good of the company.

Gone are the days when managers merely had to have technical and professional skills to be effective in the positions they hold. Aside from being head of certain departments and being on top of the hierarchy of an organisation, they need to be multi-taskers who have leadership skills to lead their respective teams.

Managers are necessarily leaders and it also works in a way that not all leaders are managers. But, in today's corporate world, both have to complement each other. Leadership qualities and skills make better managers. It's now a common trend for companies to enroll their managers in leadership courses.

Some of the key leadership traits that managers need to have to be more effective in the positions they hold are communication, motivation and inspirational, and influencing skills and leading by example to work together towards a common vision.

Managers need to have superior communication skills to be able to clearly convey what they want to their subordinates and manage the flow of information on a daily basis or during meetings. Not being able to relay information is as critical as holding back information which could be vital to the firm's operation. A manager with leadership skills will know how to handle which information needs to be disseminated and at what opportunity to do such that will achieve best results.

Managers, when they undergo leadership courses, are taught leadership qualities that motivate and inspire his members because today's tough and competitive world more often pushes employees down to the doldrums. There are deadlines to beat, work to revise, standards to meet and so much more stress factors that could make people easily give up or be less productive in what they're doing. Managers with leadership qualities know how and when to boost the morale of his subordinates just to keep them going when the going gets tough. And, it is not enough to just spew out the words of inspiration and motivation because managers who are leaders act in ways that inspire and motivate. Simply said, they lead by example.

People are individually unique, no matter how similar their backgrounds or interests may be. Handling people in a team is, therefore a task that managers must perfect and to do this, he must have leadership skills to influence and unite his members to set aside self-interests and work together for a shared goal despite difficulties and challenges that the group may encounter. If you are able to do this, productivity and efficiency comes easy.

A manager must also be a leader in a way that he has integrity to be respected and followed by his subordinates. Leading because they believe in him rather than out of function and fear is more influential and harmonious and produce better results.
