Stress Reactions and Basic Stress Management

Hard work and success have direct positive correlation to some great degree. Although hard work is not the only factor of success, it can be considered as a primary factor that leads to success. Talent and opportunity also play crucial roles but great effort will expedite success and can offset any deficiency in other factors. Working hard to achieve success in any endeavor, however, usually lead to dangerous stress levels.

Modern-day living is too demanding that stress is almost inevitable. This is especially true for those who are living in highly urbanized areas. Stress is a consequence of fast-paced lifestyles. Careers, family life, relationships, and social pressures are the most common causes of stressful situations that may lead to health problems if not properly managed.

It is not surprising why the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, metabolic diseases and cancers have risen in countries that are highly industrialized. Countries such as the United States have fast-paced lifestyles that many people are overworked and stressed-out. Ironically, overwork and stress can actually undermine success not only in terms of physical health but also in terms of coping psychologically.

Stress is a natural physiological reaction based on fight or flight response when situations become dangerous or threatening. Stress hormones such as insulin and adrenalin are released into the bloodstream. The heart beats faster and the blood pressure rises, heightening alertness. These reactions are useful in short bursts but they could be detrimental if sustained at long periods.

Here are some tips on how to effectively manage stress and cope with demanding situations:

Exercise - People who are subjected to stress tend to become lethargic and obese. The rise in blood sugar and insulin demand is the main culprit for this. Consequently, the need for food and sweets also increases, leading to diabetes. Regular exercise can counteract this detrimental situation and prevent the downward spiral of health.

Meditate - Mental focus is crucial in relieving stress and accomplishing goals. A visit to a temple or church or any quiet place can help meditation. Breathe deeply and free the mind from worries even if for a few moments.

Organize - Stress at work can be minimized by being highly organized. Work efficiency can be improved. The piling up of tasks can also be prevented in this manner. Being organized will help in making work more manageable.

Spa treatment - Occasional spa treatment can effectively relieve stress by calming the mind and body. Various treatments such as aroma therapy and massage can help the mind and body to relax.

Humor - As the old adage goes, "laughter is the best medicine." Watching a funny movie or video from the internet can help stressed-out people relax. Laughter can increase endorphins and improve blood circulation. Occasionally visiting a comedy bar could prove to be helpful.

Eat healthy food - As Hippocrates said, "Let your medicine be your food and your food be your medicine." It is true today as it has been true for more than two thousand years. Healthy food products such as vegetables have natural anti-oxidants and flavonoids that can counteract stress and prevent diseases.
