Optimizing Potentials Through Proper Motivation

Whether it is losing weight, getting straight A's, becoming an employee of the month or passing a professional board examination, the strength of motivation primarily determines the probability of success. Most people accomplish things that are far below their potentials simply because they are not motivated enough to succeed. Goals themselves serve as motivations but committing to these goals or sustaining the drive to pursue these goals requires different approaches.

Potential vs. reality

More often than not, people experience failures in life and in their careers because they are unable to fully realize their potentials. Many people are even unaware of their true capabilities or perhaps not confident enough to realize these capabilities. Ironically, fear to fail actually leads to failure because those who are afraid usually never try or take the easier and safer path of mediocrity.

Optimizing potentials requires strong motivation and opportunity. Case in point is a teenager who is talented musician but has unsupportive parents. Perhaps the parents are convinced that there is insufficient career growth or chance to succeed in music. Perhaps the parents are much keen to sending their child to college to take engineering or other courses that are unrelated to music.

Circumstances may not provide good opportunities for potentials or talents to be fully developed and applied. Many workers find themselves in jobs that they do not like or even trained for. Some may succeed in their tangential career paths but some may remain to feel frustrated and unmotivated. Only a few people find a perfect convergence of their passions, talents and careers.

Awareness

People cannot possibly optimize their potentials without first having knowledge of their talents and passions. There must first be a convergence between passion and talent before actual direction can be determined and concrete actions can be taken. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of their true talents and passions.

Individuals who are fully aware of their talents and passions will have better opportunity to focus their efforts and resources in achieving success. Individuals can effectively distinguish between things that are essential and things that are mere distractions.

Opportunity

Success is also determined by external factors that are sometime beyond the control of individuals. Situational circumstances may not always favor individuals. Opportunities may be rare for some. This is especially true for people who are born in impoverish conditions or in war-torn communities. However, external conditions are only secondary in terms of determining success in any pursuit.

Highly motivated and talented people either use their current situations as means to find opportunities or they create their own opportunities. The best examples are the successful entrepreneurs who rose from their impoverished and unfavorable situations. There are almost always good opportunities that are accessible even in seemingly dire situations. It is a matter of positive attitude and determination in finding these opportunities.
