Input-Output Ratio of Productivity

Work efficiency measured in terms of productivity, which is actually the ratio between output and input; or rather the quotient of the total units of output divided by the total units of input. This definition might be too general and vague but it gives some idea how productivity can be assessed. Specific works and projects have more detailed parameters on measuring productivity.

Output is typically measured in terms of revenue while input is generally measured in terms of capital investments or expenditures. Input can also be classified into different categories such as labor, work hours, and raw materials. However, all of these can be summarized as monetary value. For instance, labor input can be summarized as the total wages paid.

In terms of individual productivity, similar principles can be applied but at a much simpler and smaller scale. Individual productivity can be expressed in terms of the quantity of work done during the mandatory hours of work. It could be based on the output quota such as in the case of per-piece factory workers in a textile company.

Boosting personal or individual productivity at work has several strategies involved depending on the specific tasks. However, there are some general techniques that can be applied. The main goal of increasing productivity can be subdivided into smaller and manageable sub-objectives.

Optimize inputs - Since work productivity is the ratio between input and output, optimizing or maximizing inputs will significantly help to increase productivity. Optimizing inputs involves eliminating wastes and utilizing minimal resources to produce the same output.

Time management - Productivity can be increased through proper time management. Greater amount of work can be accomplished at lesser amount of time if the tasks are properly programmed. Time management involves prioritizing urgent and important tasks. It also involves setting realistic deadlines.

Task delegation - Delegating tasks oftentimes involve the authority to do so. However, even ordinary employees can delegate or pass their less important tasks to others who may be willing to take these tasks. Task delegation can make the work more efficient by having better focus on the more important and urgent tasks.

Keep updated - Learning is a lifetime process that always has room for improvement. It does not end at school but should continue in all other aspects of life. Individuals who are serious in improving their productivity should invest in learning new approaches, technology and latest trends related to their endeavors. Knowledge will provide better competitive edge for individuals.

Self-reward - Rewarding oneself for accomplishing a milestone at work will help boost productivity. Looking forward to finish a task with self-imposed incentive will be less burdensome and could be exciting. Occasional spa treatment or buying new gadgets could be a good self-incentive to be more productive.
