The Secret Benefits of Employment Gaps

Gaps in employment and education can occur outside term-time or when temporary employment positions expire. This can leave a person worrying about their financial situation and feeling worthless. Rather than spending time worrying about the future and how to earn money, it can be a great time to learn new skills and broaden social horizons.

If you've lost your job and are accustomed to a set income, ordering your finances is a major priority. Signing on the Job Seeker's Allowance immediately can help to cover some expenses. Claims can take a while to process so it's important to alert your local job centre as soon you're unemployed. You can also inform a job centre adviser of your current living circumstances and they can advise you of any other benefits you may be entitled to.

If you're scheduled to take a lengthy break from education or have a rough date of temporary employment termination, then you should have your current CV ready and begin applying for various positions through flat fee recruitment companies before your position ends. This could help to reduce the time you spend out of work and allows time to apply for a position which you may have a strong desire to fulfil.

If you find yourself feeling bored and worthless during your stint of unemployment you could volunteer for a local charity. You could search through voluntary advertisements and find a position which you feel you would gain valuable experience from. Voluntary work looks great on CV and can help you learn new skills, increasing your employable qualities. If you're worried about the financial aspects of volunteering, many organisations offer to cover travel and food expenses whilst working.

Broaden your social horizons and perform some networking. Joining a new social club during education and employment breaks can help you to learn new skills and meet new people. Dance classes, sports clubs and theatre groups are just a tiny proportion of social groups that can help you feel valued whilst experiencing unemployment. You can also inform the new people you meet that you are looking for a job, as someone may know of current vacancies or be in a position of authority and help you get a job within a company.

Gaps during employment and education should be utilised as a time to add more valuable qualities to your CV. Almost everyone experiences unemployment at some point in their lives, leaving them feeling worthless and stressed. If gaps are used to their full potential they can be invaluable periods of a person's career path.
