Surviving Disaster

An emergency situation can often give little or no notice - a terrorist act, a flood or tsunami, or a hurricane. Disasters do happen all the time in some part of the world so it is sensible to make the necessary preparations to give yourself every chance of coping in a crisis situation.

Changing ones thinking when disaster hits assists with being able to cope with an event in a more relaxed and focused state. Preparing for different situations means that when the time comes to act your are much more likely to handle the event. Know where to start in your preparations maybe daunting but making a start is important. It can be a smaller supply to begin with which you can add over time.

A shorter term survival pack that is ready to go if you need to evacuate is essential. Items to include are first aid kit, duct tape, flashlight, batteries, multi-tool, pocket knife, bottled water, any essential medications, whistle, glow light, compass, matches, toilet paper and wipes, rope and tarps, comfort items(for the children). These emergency supplies should be accessible at short notice.

When it comes to food supplies the most important factor to consider is which items will sell out first in a crisis

Other than food, the essentials you will need come down to what would you need if knew no aid was coming as has been the case in many disasters. Consider more than torches for your source of lighting. If there is no power then your lifestyle will change to getting everything done between sun rise and sunset. Lanterns and candles will be needed. How will you cook - a portable stove or an open fire in which case a hatchet/axe will be needed. First aid supplies are obvious but perhaps an instructional manual to if you don not have sufficient training. For longer term crises a supply of seeds may harvest a supply of vegetables. Keeping healthy and clean is always a priority but in disaster areas it may be more so so personal hygiene products and bleach for cleaning and antiseptic purposes will help. Some protection maybe needed so a weapon should be considered. You can only stock a limited amount of water so a water filtration system will be needed for ongoing water supplies. An
d lastly a power source such as generator or solar panels.

It pays to have all the items that you will need to get through the time of chaos that may follow. Don't make the mistake of relying emergency services or government assistance in a time of crisis. There are many instances when help was unavailable or took weeks to reach those who desperately needed it.
