I've written over fifty books. Writing another one would be easy. I've already wrestled with the demons in that category. I won.

But learning how to sing and play guitar is a new category for me. I'm struggling in it.

The struggle isn't real. Not in any outward, measurable way. But it's sure real otherwise. The struggle is within; it's the conscious and unconscious thoughts of self judgment that make us fight with our own progress.

It's not any fun, either.

Let me explain:

In my third lesson with Daniel Barrett (lead singer for the band PorterDavis), he asked me to play and sing I song I had been working on. (The acoustic guitar version of the Rob Thomas song Lonely No More. See PPS below.)

I did. But as soon as I made a mistake, my body tensed, my playing got awkward, my singing was strained, and my face filled with tension. I was even mad at myself.

Dan's eyes grew large and he waved his hand to stop me, saying, "Man, you just brought in the entire Gestapo on yourself!"

I stopped.

I took a deep breath.

I reflected on what just happened.

A part of me wanted my singing and playing to be perfect. Even though there is nothing like perfection in the world -- none of us can agree on the perfect song or singer, let alone much else -- some aspect of my mind had set the bar so high that there was no way I was going to reach it. And when I flubbed, that same mind beat me silly.

I realized what I was doing.

You can't really learn much when you're in chains.

I took a deep breath.

I relaxed.

I let the chains drop.

I remembered that the goal is to sing and play and learn, and to have fun as I did so. Yes, I had lots to learn. But beating myself for my efforts wasn't helping. At all.

Dan and I talked for a while about how we judge ourselves harshly. It's a learned behavior. We all have it. Try to learn anything challenging and new and you'll see what I mean.

A part of us is trying to please our inner critics -- parents or teachers, family or friends, or even ourselves. We're trying to learn, but when we don't meet those invisible high standards and those invisible voices in our head, we lower the boom on ourselves.

That doesn't help.

No wonder so many people give up on their goals, dreams and intentions.

A lot of who they are listening to, that is talking them out of their own best interests, is their own mind.

As Bruce Barton (who I wrote about in my book The Seven Lost Secrets of Success) once said:

"Nothing splendid has ever been achieved except by those who dared believe that something inside of them was superior to circumstances."

If you're trying to attract anything in your life, stop trying and start relaxing, all while moving toward your goal with intention, passion and action, and your results will accelerate.

Be as gentle with yourself as you would be with a baby learning to walk, or a puppy you're training to sit up or roll over.

This is a huge insight.

My going through the process of learning to be a musician is letting me see how this works in me. I'm sharing it so you can reflect on how it works in you, too.

Don't let the "Mind Gestapo" stop you or slow you.

It's just a voice.

It's just self-talk.

But you're in control of it.

Bring in the Love Army instead.

Love yourself, your process and your present talents.

With love, you can achieve and attract what you want -- and you'll enjoy the adventure all the more.

I'm no longer struggling with playing guitar, singing, or writing my own music.

I'm now in charge of the voices in my head in this new category of learning.

Why Do Brain Mappings in Strategic Planning Activities

Any company, organization or movement has to have an at least yearly period of strategic planning in order to lay out specific plans for the coming year as to what it needs to achieve and how to actually achieve those things. Among the many subjects discussed in leadership development programs, periods of strategic planning have thus been made the usual recipients of most attention and emphasis by those who conduct these programs. And among the many aspects of a strategic planning activity, there is one tool that needs to be highlighted in order to make the activity most relevant to the participating company workers.

And how is this tool called? Well yes, it's called brain maps.

Brain maps are actually very simple diagrams that help those who are doing the planning to express the many things that have been running in their heads in a more organized manner. The concept behind brain mapping is taken from the way the brain naturally works.

Essentially, the brain is both a leader and a manager. As is well known from the principles laid out in most management courses, the head often needs to have a secretary in order for it to place things in better perspective, and thus evaluate matters from the perfect viewpoint. In the case of the brain itself, introspection is then needed in order to let itself see quite clearly the things which it is only half-aware of at the very beginning.

Now only an understanding of the set-up of the brain would suffice to instill the importance of having brain maps as tools to outlining goals in the most precise manner. Actually, the brain can be divided into the conscious and the subconscious parts. The subconscious part of the brain may have all the goals and plans and possible tools stored in there, but the conscious part must "see" all these under a big, excellently organized picture in order to make wise decisions.

In other words, the brain must be aided in doing a kind of management consulting that makes use of pen and paper as the third, consultant party. With the brain and the company set-up placed side by side, the conscious part may then be representing the company headship; the subconscious part, the rest of the company workers; and the brain maps, the company secretary. Once the company workers can identify what their minds are actually up to by means of brain mapping, the strategists as a whole can now begin to lay down solutions to the specific company problems.

Indeed, brain mapping is such an essential tool for an effective and efficient executive coaching. It is then recommended that companies employ the method in their strategic planning activities.

Does Inner Wisdom Breed Outer Peace?

I've often been told that my presence brings with it a calming effect. When I say it's a result of being clear about my inner knowing I get a puzzled look. As if I'm talking a foreign language. It's high time that "whole beings" who understand their inner wisdom came out of hiding to run the corporations of tomorrow. Whole beings are simply those individuals who are clear on their inherent truth. That we are whole and that includes even those parts of ourselves that we have hidden for so long. I will elaborate on what it truly means to be a whole being in another article as that is a truly big topic.

My clarity in this regard is the reason that so many times I was put in charge of certain projects at work when I was in corporate. They needed a leader that would bring peace to an otherwise out of balance project or situation and, "tag" I became it.

Most people would relegate this sense of inner wisdom and calming ability to my years of experience in corporate and/or just my years of living life and making it through tough times. Many think that corporate or work lives and your personal life are separate. How far from true is that?

The truth is that you are a whole being whose personal life will impact your work life and vice versa. So, when there are individuals who want to keep those two things separate, what they're doing is tearing them self apart. As an entrepreneur this is ever more evident because you are who you are and you bring that to your business; actually you are in everything you do.

That is why it is ever so important to always understand yourself in relation to your world and to then create that center of peace within you from your own inner wisdom; from having gotten to know yourself very well.

Most people run away from who they are and therefore never really get to know themselves in a deeper way. They hide out behind their job; their home, their spouse, their children, their circumstances, their experiences and forget that the majority of this life is an illusion of their making.

So, how do we arrive at that inner wisdom that breeds inner & outer peace? It starts by really spending time getting to know yourself so well that you will feel that no outside source knows you better. This will naturally spill into your business and this will also magnetize those to you that you're seeking and who are truly longing for your services. They will come because you will have gotten so clear in who you are and what you can truly provide that there unfulfilled need will draw them to connect with you.

The truth is that until you do this, you'll run around "spinning your wheels" as they say, still trying to figure out what you're here to do. You see the work you do on you will pay off in big dividends in the long term and is something that no one can ever take away from you. I'm not saying that you have to be perfect before you reach the point where you can help others but you'll want to be the best you that you can be in order to be an example for those that come to you just a few paces behind you on the same path. Leaders lead leaders without always knowing that's what they're doing. So do whatever it takes to find your inner wisdom and express your inner and outer peace because it is worth it to you and everyone whose life you touch. Give yourself permission to tap into that already core knowing that you brought into this life and that everyone truly has access to.

It is, after all, time to truly awaken to this truth about you for we've hidden it too long from ourselves and we've already seen what that has brought us. Let's try something different this time.

The Success Process: How To Eat A Hairy Knuckle Sandwich For Breakfast

The Success Process

This applies strictly to those of us who have previously gone through the inner-success process. Meaning we have done the hard work of improving ourselves holistically to the point where we are strong and wise enough to make it through the outer-Success Process if we just know how it works.

Let's begin.

The Success Process starts with the Imagination Phase. We have an idea, vision or dream of some sort. It could be a new business, a novel project within an existing business, a different career path or a work of art of some sort.

It's something that resonates deep within us and generates excitement.

It's bigger or different than anything we've done in the past, but we believe we can do it.

We believe this because we have the perfect combination of high hopes, fantastically high levels of self-confidence and complete ignorance as to what exactly we're getting ourselves in to and just how excruciatingly painful it will be.

So far so good.

If whatever goal we're trying to achieve is something outside our expertise, the process moves in to the Preparation Phase. Here we learn everything we can in every way we can about this new thing.

We seek out a mentor, read books, go to seminars - the whole shebang. We immerse ourselves in this new world. If we don't get overwhelmed and drown in the ocean of knowledge we get to move on.

Next we proceed to the Action Phase where we take concrete action toward our goal. This inevitably requires us to overcome a fear of some sort. If nothing else, a fear of the unknown.

If our goal is to start a new business we begin creating the product.

If our goal is to write a book, we begin writing.

And so on.

Once we've gone out on a limb and taken somewhat of a blind step of faith, something genuinely amazing tends to happen: we have some sort of immediate success.

It might be big; it might be small. Whatever it is, it's always significant.

If we're working on a new business, maybe the product just effortlessly comes together and it's mind blowing. Or we score a big deal of some sort right out the gate.

If we're writing a book, possibly the first chapter quickly flows out of us and shocks us to death with its profundity and wit.

If we're acting, we get an immediate opportunity to exchange sexual favors for a supporting role in a reverse mortgage commercial.

We're always pleasantly surprised, but we shouldn't be because it's just a part of the process.

Life is rewarding us for taking a step of faith and saying, "keep going."

Without this immediate success the next part of the process would be simply unbearable. We're getting a taste of the dream to whet our appetite and provide the motivation necessary to make it through what I call "This Part Of The Success Process Sucks Big Hairy Knuckles."

But before we get to that, let me just say this: you may be sitting there thinking to yourself, "Wait a minute. I've tried things in the past and didn't get that immediate success. What the heck? You are a LIAR, Preston. I'm going to continue to read and buy every single thing you put online, but you are a LIAR, sir."

If that's you then, first of all, screw you for calling me names, man - that's messed up. But here is what happened; it's one of two things…

1. You attempted something without first going through the inner-success process, in which case nothing you do will ever succeed.

2. You weren't supposed to keep going. You were on the wrong track. Be grateful for that so-called failure and look for the hidden lesson.

So we've tasted sweet success and have arrived. "It's going to be this easy forever," we think.

Unbeknownst to us we have just unwittingly arrived at something akin to a Navy SEAL tryout. One hundred people show up … maybe three live to tell the story and strap on a navy snorkel for duty.

Everything up to this point has been a mere pre-screening process.

It's like someone has handed us an MPK5 machine gun to use on a target dummy, we experience the joy of violence, and then they take the gun back and say, "Ok, see how fun that was? Now sign up for this thing over here. I know, I know - it says 'Hell Week.' Hahaha. Never mind that. It's just a funny name for it. You'll survive most likely."

Enter the Hairy Knuckle Sucking Phase.

Pause.

Have you ever sucked on a big hairy knuckle?

It. Is. Horrible.

Our job during this phase is merely to stay alive and don't stop trying to breathe.

The ease with which our initial success came? Replaced with resistance.

We may as well be trying to bench press two planets connected together with a plutonium barbell for all we can tell. And we cannot do that in case I'm not being clear.

The initial excitement about our dream? Converted to torment.

As the reality of what it really takes to succeed in our chosen endeavor sets in and the true level of our abilities are exposed, the bliss of ignorance is promptly transformed into the pain of reality.

The ideas stop flowing.

The money stops coming.

We stop smiling.

At the climax of this apparently sick cosmic joke we hit what appears to be an invisible wall. It's like an invisible ceiling except for all races and genders equally.

Things stop working.

What made so much sense in the beginning now seems like utter nonsense.

The things that appeared so easy are now almost unbearably difficult.

Whereas previously we were prancing freely and joyfully across a field of wheat like Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie, we are now marching painfully and miserably through what appears to a mixture of boiling hot tar and quick sand.

And this, my friend, is the defining moment.

What are we going to do? Are we going to keep plowing forward despite the pain and lack of results? Or are we going to quit?

Contrary to what you may be thinking, either way is equally noble depending on the circumstances. But before I explain why, let's answer this question:

Why does the Hairy Knuckle Sucking Phase (HKSP) exist in the first place?

Why Ask Why?

I want you to start a new habit. Pretend you're four years old, and start asking "why?" again. Ask it about everything.

There is a reason things happen. There is a reason people do and say things.

Don't just assume the worst - or the best - out of ignorance. Ask "why?".

Look for the reality behind things. Become a truth seeker.

Not doing this would be like going your entire adult life with a guy in a big red Tickle Me Elmo suit following you around and Russian leg sweeping you every 5 minutes and hating it but never really wondering "why is this happening?"

It's not an exact analogy, but it's pretty close.

If we find the motivation within us to plow through this point of no return and break through the HKSP barrier, we then enter the final phase. I call it Heaven On Planet Earth (HOPE).

HOPE is where you've always dreamed of being but have refused to pay the price of admission.

HOPE is what you feel deep down in your bones life is supposed to be like but can't figure out how to make happen.

HOPE is what you were made for; so expect to be miserable until you get here.

The HOPE phase brings us back full circle to when everything was easy and exciting but with one small difference: it's a thousand times easier and more exciting. And it doesn't go away for a really long time.

We stop seeking for opportunities. Opportunities begin seeking us.

We cease striving for money. We may as well be printing it in our living rooms it comes so easily.

We no longer chase after people. People chase us.

(The only time it goes away is when it is time to move on to something even greater and more intimately aligned with your ultimate life's mission. Expect to repeat the entire Success Process at that point only on a much more intense level.)

We have paid our dues and have arrived.
