Unveiling Drug Addiction And Its Effects

Substance abuse is the uncontrollable craving for any substance that could harm the body of the one using it. It affects anyone regardless of age, religion, race or social status.

Medical help should be sought when the person cannot stop using drugs on his own will. Regardless of the type of abuse, drug rehabilitation programs are available to help them heal and get back to his normal life.

Alcohol abuse

A recent survey of the Center for Disease Control states that about 20 percent of alcoholics have had five or more alcoholic drinks on one day. Some people drink alcoholic beverages daily while others only drinks once in a while but in large volume. Whatever the case may be either could result in alcohol abuse. Binge drinking is a unique case of abusing alcohol but it can cause poor judgment and alcohol poisoning.

Drug Abuse

Any type of drug whether purchased illegally or recommended by a healthcare provider when used for pleasure is regarded as drug abuse. Prescribed medications commonly abused are steroids, analgesics, narcotics, barbiturates and tranquilizers. These types of medicines although helpful could give harmful effects when used beyond the doctor's order. Illegal drugs often abused are crack, cocaine and also heroin.

Effects to the person

The person taking the drugs is the one who will greatly suffer the effects of the drug abuse. It will make him physically and psychologically ill. He will experience painful withdrawal symptoms, changes in personality and affects his mental state. His working relationships, personal life, and financial life is also affected.

Effects to the body

Drug abuse causes damaging effects on our body systems. It includes damage to the lungs, liver, heart and other major organs of the body. Withdrawal symptoms to some medications could also be lethal. When alcohol consumption is prolonged it can cause severe and permanent harm to the liver. Financial problems often arise due to addiction and this could be the reason they will have difficulty to finance a successful recovery.

Searching for help

The person suffering from addiction should seek help from the nearest drug treatment centers. This is the initial step in the journey of recovery. A licensed healthcare provider will assess the condition of the addict and will refer him to an inpatient rehab facility, out-patient treatment center, support group or a psychologist.

Moreover, the effects of addiction must be the pushing force that will lead an addict to a decision to live a drug-free life.
