Things That Keep Kids From Abusing Drugs

It's alarming to know that individuals who're abusing drugs aren't only increasing in number but actually also includes children. The use of illicit substances will do nothing good for any person, his family, and society. Thus, before one can even learn to begin using such prohibited substances; one should be prevented from doing so.

Family

Substance abuse prevention should start within the family, particularly when the kids are still young. While the children are still young, the parents and the entire family should foster an open communication within the family to nurture a good foundation when the kids reach adolescence, that's one of the most difficult years for a parent. The kids should be taught about the importance of avoiding prohibited substances which include drugs, alcohol, and even tobacco products because of the dangers associated with these items. Also considered as one of the best treatments for addiction is one which is provided before it even starts, through proper guidance by one's own family and by being a good model to the growing children. Kids and parents should work together on the projects and the home projects. In addition, parents must provide children with family rules.

School

The school also plays a major role for the treatments for drug addiction before the problem even starts. While the children are still in preschool, they must already be taught about the dangers of substance abuse. Young children can gain when they learn how to solve problems and manage various emotions which include anger, stress and frustration. These children can also benefit if they learn how to express their emotions to other people, since the suppression of feelings is one of the pathways to abusing substances and other unhealthy activities. Older students can then be educated about the specific dangers involved in abusing drugs and the variety of factors that can lead one to use illegal substances. They must also be provided with activities which will help them to acquire critical thinking skills, assertiveness with their buddies, and drug resistance skills.

Community

The community should also be active in helping kids to stay away from illegal drugs. While there are various groups in the society such as clubs, churches, and therapy facilities which provide information on how to stay away from drug abuse, other influential figures on kids should also be active in keeping kids off substance abuse. Professional athletes, entertainers, civic leaders, and the police can all be good role models for children in the society. Through advertisements, literatures, and signs, the campaign against substance abuse can be actively implemented.

When children are kept away from substance abuse, not only do they help themselves to become good and responsible adults, but they also aid their families and their societies.
