Relocation Procedures

Things have finally come together - and you are moving! You know you are headed for a few months filled with a whirlwind of activities. As you lie in bed at night, your mind reels with the many things that must be done in a relatively short period of time. Here are some tips to help keep you on track and give you some direction as you begin this exciting adventure.

1) Make a list. While we will discuss many things in this report, every situation is different. You need one place to keep everything, so find a folder and notebook in which to keep all important papers along with the names and phone numbers of contact people. This notebook and folder that is filled with contracts, receipts and other papers will help you stay organized as you begin this exciting journey.

2) Start clearing things out. No matter where you are moving, you know that you have a lot of junk. You can now start cleaning things out of your house. You can separate your items into three main categories. One group is of items that you throw away. This should include anything that is broken or unable to be used any longer. Another group will consist of items that you can sell. Through a yard sale or on the internet, you can often time sell items to make some extra money to help with moving expenses. The last group is of items that you want to give away. This could be to friends, family or a charity. As you sort through things, it's also a good idea to start packing up items that you know you want to take, but you won't need anytime soon.

3) If you rent, you need to let your landlord know that you are moving. Be sure and ask for any down payment that you paid when moving in. If you own your home, you must contact a real estate agent to get your house on the market. You may need to contact banks for appraisals and loan information as well. This step is very important as your home likely involves a great deal of money that you will need as you move.

4) Make an appointment to get a physical exam, as well as eye and dental exams. This is especially true if you are moving abroad. You don't want to move somewhere and need health care right away. So, take care of these things before you move.

5) Contact a moving company. Finding a good moving company is one of the most important aspects of moving. Moving can be expensive, so you need to get some recommendations for moving companies. You need to call them and get an estimate. This can be done by them coming to your home to see what needs moved or by you giving them a good idea of how much you have. Either way, compare two or three estimates to see which company is giving you the best deal. Also, remember that customer service is an important aspect when you have to deal with the moving company

Moving can be stressful, but it's also the way to a new life. Regardless of why you are moving, new changes are coming your way. Plan to move with a good attitude, knowing that you will soon be settled in your new home.
