2012 and the Mayan Calendar: an Opportunity for Spiritual Growth

Most of us have heard various predictions regarding 2012 -- some uplifting, and others that are based in fear. It seems to be generally accepted in spiritual circles that changes are accelerating, and many want to attune themselves with the positive aspects of a possible 2012 shift.

From my own research, there isn't actually any end-time scenario predicted in the Mayan Calendar. The "end" of the Mayan Calendar is in fact a shifting of the ages and the start of a new cycle. Mayan calendar expert, Carl Calleman, comments: "What we are to do now is to shift from serving our egos to serving the divine plan, and indeed we need to commit to do so for a harmonization of the world to take place."

Notably, with particular reference to the events of 2012, Calleman said, "What we are witnessing now is the culmination of this divine plan, a culmination, which may be expected to be quite spectacular and it is for this reason that we may find important information relating to the Mayan calendar also in the Bible and the Quran. Ultimately the orchestrator is God, who very likely would not like to see this world end in disaster after 16 billion years of evolution. Because the Mayan Calendar describes a divinely orchestrated system of cycles and changes, I believe that it is showing that all is as it is meant to be and this is not an "end-time" scenario."

To whatever degree any of us believes in the Mayan calendar and its description of the different cycles of the world, one thing is for sure: 2012 is very much in the global consciousness as a time of changes in the world. Since that is the case, we might as well use this unique opportunity to "ride the wave" into a higher state of consciousness.

So 2012 may be a great year to devote ourselves to our spiritual development. For one thing, in times of accelerated change it can be a lot easier to flow with the changes if we have an established practice and are able to maintain a meditative state. And second, if you accept that there may be some truth to the predictions in the Mayan Calendar for 2012, why not be one of the many people who are expected to realize a spiritual awakening in this time?

Regardless of your spiritual path -- meditation, yoga, mysticism, self-inquiry, or a blend of multiple techniques -- 2012 may be a great time to focus on your practice and make your own personal shift into a higher state of consciousness.
