Learning Effective Time Management Ability

It is important to become skilled at time management since you can accomplish a lot of tasks given limited time. You are also relieved from too much demands and the weight of deadlines by managing time effectively. This is a skill that managers and employees have to become adept at. In doing so, workers become more productive and worry less about work targets. Moreover, it leads to avoidance of unnecessary delays and postponements in performing your job. Time management is a talent that you can learn by adopting the following pointers:

Prepare a list of to-do things and the deadline for each task. The traditional small notebook can come in handy despite the emergence of information technology and preference for advanced software applications. However, it is still practical to make use of reminders in your computer and mobile phone.

You have to set deadlines and adhere to this self-imposed objective. Make sure that you allot several days before your assignment needs to be completed in case of unexpected circumstances. Do not drag your feet because this is the number one nemesis of productivity. It is hard to meet deadlines and these are often the cause of strain and additional worries but it is imperative to rise above this challenge.

Refrain from multi-tasking because this tends to take away your concentration from your most important goal. You become more efficient by being focused on one task.

Use your down time such as when you are driving or walking to plan ahead. Prioritize your obligations so you achieve the most essential to the least important. Avoid getting burned out since this can mean that you will be ineffective mentally and physically.

Pass on responsibilities when needed. This is normal in the workplace especially for supervisors. Do not take on too many things that you cannot cope with. This can cause stress and affect your overall performance. Never feel bad if you have to delegate some of your work to subordinates.

It pays to be part of a team. However, make sure that the objectives are very transparent and that each team member is accountable for a certain portion of the overall aim. Communication lines should always be open to avoid any misunderstanding. Assign tasks to individuals with a sense of responsibility so projects can be done promptly and properly.

Give yourself some form of incentive after achieving something significant. This will serve as motivation for you to do better in the future.

The Practical Visionary

Around 1994 my life was changed by a book called Spiritual Politics.

It helped me see the big picture of global conflicts and gave me an elevated view of what was happening. It delivered a fascinating analysis of the cosmic, karmic and metaphysical reasons behind politics, world affairs and current events.

It revealed that I had to work on myself to make a difference in the outer world. It's a large, detailed, and exhaustive work on the hidden reasons behind the superficial news and talk show bantering. It's all about change as an inside job. I never forgot the book.

Recently the same authors came out with a new book, The Practical Visionary: A New World Guide to Spiritual Growth and Social Change. I was so eager to read this one that I bought the Kindle edition from Amazon and instantly started reading it on my iPad. I liked what I saw so much that I went back to Amazon and bought copies of the paperback to give as gifts. I then reached out to the authors, Corinne McLaughlin and Gordon Davidson, to interview them.

The Practical Visionary offers overwhelming proof that every social problem you can name is being addressed by some person or group. There are entire chapters stuffed with resources. It does the soul good to see so much being done in the world to move us forward to unity. In a time when the mainstream media rarely nods in the direction of the good deeds people are doing, seeing all this evidence for the positive is wonderful.

None of this is to say you or I are off the hook. We can't let others solve all the problems we see. We have work to do. But the best way to do it is to align with your connection to the Universe and do what's right for you. As you do what you are called to do, you become The Practical Visionary.

Besides all the resources, wisdom, and optimism in the book, another reason I love it are the meditations in it. Early on there is a vivid one about pretending to turn an inner knob to raise the vibration of your energy until it matches that of Spirit. I was a little tired as I began the meditation, but just imagining playing with an inner frequency dial that raised my energy actually did raise it. Nice.

The Practical Visionary reveals eight keys for transforming yourself and the world. It's not an either-or approach. As you work on yourself, you work on the world; as you work on the world, you work on yourself.

1. Shift from what's dying to what's being born: discover the new world of practical visionaries all around you;

2. Understand the big picture and the higher evolutionary plan: find your part and get engaged;

3. Make your livelihood a social change strategy: be a spiritual warrior, an innovator, a reformer and/or an exemplar;

4. Invoke the magic of your soul: explore the new world within you and make friends with your subconscious;

5. Turn within to find a source of spiritual strength: develop a regular meditative practice to receive clear guidance;

6. Clarify your higher purpose and vision: create a mission, practical strategy and right timing;

7. See money as a spiritual asset: trust in the abundance of the universe--and be practical and wise;

8. Transform duality and conflict into a higher synthesis: find common ground personally and politically to change the world.

The Practical Visionary is a mind-expanding and soul-enriching book that helps move you into a new paradigm. You might even call it The Abundance Paradigm.

There are some statements in the book that make you sit bolt upright and take notice, such as:

"To progress spiritually, you shouldn't just go with the flow of whatever is happening, as some people mistakenly advise, as some flows of energy are good and some are harmful."

Don't follow someone else's personal development plan exactly. You need to customize it so it works for you. With that in mind, you have to educate yourself as much as you can in order to maximize the success of your personal development plan. If you save just a little each week, you will have built up your emergency fund in no time. This "rainy day fund" gives the security of knowing we can manage our expenses and pay off our debts.

You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. Many of these professionals are both licensed and experienced, meaning they are well-equipped to help you with your personal issues. They are there to help you analyze and sort through issues and feelings that occur on your personal journey to enlightenment. By speaking with a professional about your problems, you can lead a much healthier and enjoyable life.

Your pastor or counselor is there to help. Not only have they been trained to deal in personal growth, their experience in these issues is what makes them a good choice to speak with. They can help you get on the right path to enlightenment by analyzing what is going on in your life. You may find that sharing your personal issues with a professional will open the door to health and happiness.

Begin a special savings for emergencies. Many people think that a credit card counts as an emergency fund. Set aside a certain amount from each check for an emergency fund. It doesn't have to be a great deal of money, but be consistent. Having an emergency fund will prevent you from having to use credit cards to pay for unexpected expenses, which will save you a great deal in interest over the years.

Self help tactics come in a myriad of forms. Sometimes they require tremendous effort and energy just to stay focused. Sometimes, however, all we need to do is implement small and more gradual changes, changes that require much less energy but that in the long run accomplish the same purpose.

Fear is Just a Word

Failure is hard to take, I'm sure we all agree on that. Whether the failure manifests as a low grade on a test, an unmade sale, a bunch of unsold tickets for an event or a burnt batch of cookies, nobody likes to fail.

However, without failure, learning is impossible. Show me the person who never fails and I will say, that person never attempts, never risks, never jumps. Our successes are only as big as our failures. For what is failure but an attempt at success?

You know I'm right.

So how do we get ourselves from scared shirtless of failing, to taking teeny baby steps, all the way over the big tall wall into Successland? Well, I'm no Houdini but I do take on change pretty regularly, so I am kind of used to staring down my fears. As a result, I have a few tricks up my sleeve. Try these six tips on for size:

1) Stare your fear down by imagining the rewards of overcoming it

What if you took on a challenge as if you could not fail? What would you do? More importantly, what would you achieve? Dream big! Make stuff. Make stuff happen! Invent a gadget better than the tablet! Write a symphony to rival Wagner's! Challenge the Cake Boss to a bake off! "If you can imagine it, you can achieve it; if you can dream it, you can become it." - William Arthur Ward

2) Remove your fear's teeth with knowledge

Research what you don't know so that the unknown can't bite you. If you are afraid of what you don't know about, then guess what -- you can get un-afraid just by Googling or Wiki-ing whatever's worrying you. Wondering whether people would like to eat your homemade grasshopper cupcakes? Research it. Not sure whether doggie skydiving is a viable business model? Check out key words. Look at magazines. Ask people! Knowledge is power -- in this case, the power to knock the teeth right out of your fear's big scary jaws.

3) Break it in with perspective

Just like a bucking bronco. Worst case scenario: If you follow your bliss and act as if you can't fail, then fall flat on your butt, how long will it really take you to find another way to make money? Three months? Six months? If you have enough emergency savings to cover yourself, then chances are your recovery won't be long enough to justify staying in your current awful situation, if that situation is in fact really awful. Even if it's not really awful, how much longer can you justify living your life in beige?

4) Gain your fear's trust by showing it love and understanding

Once you put fear of failure into perspective and know what you're dealing with, it's time to make friends with it. That's right, you heard me. Understanding your fear and the fact that every failure is just an experiment or an opportunity for growth can really help you gain miles of confidence. Read biographies about successful people in your field. Take note of the stories of how many times they "failed" before they hit it big. Treat failure as your teacher, not your enemy.

5) Take your fear out for a walk

Oh yes, that's right, go get the leash and take action! It's time to put wheels on that dream! Every tiny action you take towards your goal builds your confidence and helps to smash your fears to smithereens. Trust me on this one -- even tiny training wheels are better than no wheels at all.

6) Set that fear free

Go ahead, say goodbye. Let it go. Forever! In other words, do NOT leave yourself an out. NO PLAN B. Fear of failure runs screaming from the room when it realizes you are suddenly focusing on something else -- survival! Sometimes that kind of giant leap is exactly what you need to kick fear to the curb for good.

Radical? Yes. But you can't tame a lion without a whip!

What's the point of these tips? The point is that fear is just a word. It's a word that keeps us trapped in situations, habits and patterns of thinking that no longer serve us. Fear is what keeps us addicted to food, nicotine, bad relationships and all kinds of unhealthy stuff. Open your hand and let out the leash a bit. See what happens.

How Rob Thomas Gets Inspired

He said he doesn't recall the last time he worked a 40 hour week because he works 18 hour days. (!)

He went on to explain that he often spends entire days, one after the other, trying to write a song, and turning up nothing.

But then one day a hit (such as Her Diamonds, Push, Lonely No More) is there. He admits it's the work before the hit that enables a hit to be born.

The article quoted visual artist Chuck Close as saying, "Inspiration is for amateurs."

Wow.

"Inspiration is for amateurs!"

Made me think of the famous Jack London (author, The Call of the Wild) quote where he said he doesn't wait for inspiration. He lights out after it with a club.

You may be wondering how all of this flows with my own philosophy of honoring inspiration and taking action.

I love it.

What Rob Thomas is doing is inviting inspiration with his working. There may be a time or two when a whole song comes to him as a gift, all written and ready to be sung. But I doubt it.

Inspiration comes when you show up and knock on its front door with work, and then when it gives you a peek, you take it and mold it into life.

Many authors have admitted their secret to inspiration was simply sitting and typing.

Ray Bradbury said writing a story a day gave him some classic sci-fi literature.

Jack London wrote over fifty books with his work ethic of writing 1,000 words every day.

How easy is this?

Consider -

A friend misread the Jack London quote and wrote 2,000 words a day. He wrote and published a dozen books before he realized he had accidentally doubled Jack London's discipline.

I write virtually every day, maybe not as relentlessly as Rob Thomas, but maybe I should. He's far more famous than me, and has far more girls after him.

The point: Don't sit around and wait for inspiration. Discover the prayer of work, which invites inspiration. Yes, you may perspire along the way, but if you're doing what you love, you won't care.

Let me repeat that:

When you're doing what you love, you may "work" longer hours than anyone else, but you won't care because you're doing what you love.

It looks to me like the success formula of Rob Thomas is this:

1. He follows his passion. He openly says all he knows how to do is sing and write songs. He's focused.

2. He shows up to work. He says he works 18 hour days.

3. He continues to work. He shuns the parties and distractions and continues inviting inspiration through the discipline of work.

Pretty simple, isn't it?

Do what you love by working at it every day and your intention will meet inspiration along the way. (Hey, that sounded like a song lyric.)

Rob is so clear about his purpose that he used to identify himself at airport security as "rock star" before he was one.

Finally, there's another quote in the same interview with Rob that I like. He said don't be afraid to screw up. To be exact, he said…

"Dare to suck. That changes everything."

Now get to work.

AVETMISS Compliance and AQTF Indicators

In the field of vocational education and training, Australia is one of the world's best. In keeping with this mark of excellence, the AQTF or the Australian Quality Training Framework was established. Once a Registered Training Organization or RTO, either run by the government or by a private entity, meets the standards contained in the framework, there is no doubt that the vocational education and training it provides to the public is recognized all over Australia.

The first standard that an RTO has to meet is to be an AVETMISS Compliant. This means that an RTO must have a student records management system capable of storing and exporting data based on the AVETMISS standards. Compliance of the standards can be determined by the gathering of the following information:

1. Basic details such as name, age, sex, geographical location, indigenous origin, disability record, and vocational education training background are gathered upon enrollment of students or trainees in an RTO.

2. The type of training provider, where the training was conducted, and the source of the training funds - either from the government, training territory, federal ministers, or community.

3. The enrolled number of units of competency as basis for qualification, modules for courses, how the instruction was taken - either in a traditional classroom, on the job, or through online instruction, the outcome of the training, and date of issuance of the parchment qualification.

These details need be stored in the student management information system ready to be reported to the NCVER or the National Centre for Vocational Education Research. Said information will then be processed by the NCVER validation software to ensure compliance of the AVETMISS and of the AQTF standards.

The success of Registered Training Organization or RTOs can be determined by the AQTF Quality Indicators. There are three (3) indicators that have been identified which are relevant to RTOs in continuously enhancing their services, to wit:

1. Learner Engagement. This deals on the extent in which learners are actually engaged in activities that promote superb and quality results. This incorporates learners perception as to the quality of the competency they received from the RTOs.

2. Employer Satisfaction. This indicator mainly focuses on the appreciation of the employer on the learner's competency development, its relevance to the job being performed in the workplace, and the further training necessary to be done. In other words, the employer is allowed to evaluate the total quality of the training results.

3. Competency Completion. This is the barometer that the public should first consider in the choosing RTOs. This indicator shows the mass of enrollments, number of completed units of qualification, and the units of competency awarded during the previous calendar year by RTOs.

The value of being an AQTF compliant is translated in the aforementioned indicators. Essentially, RTOs have to meet the demands of the public, thus, requiring compliance of the AQTF and the AVETMISS standards. Once done, students or trainees can be assured that their chosen RTO is one of the best vocational education and training providers in the Australian region.

You have of course heard, "Use it or lose it." Increasingly, "Use it or lose it" is taking the form of videogames, computer-based "brain training" programs, neurofeedback systems, and event ancient practices such as meditation.

Now, is brain training the same as "Use it or lose it"?

Anything we do involving novelty, variety, and challenge stimulates the brain and can contribute to building capacity and brain reserve. For instance, learning how to play the piano activates a number of brain functions (attention, memory, motor skills, etc.), which triggers changes in the brain itself (this is called "brain plasticity"). Indeed, musicians have larger brain volume in areas that are important for playing an instrument: motor, auditory and visuospatial regions. However, such an activity may take thousands of hours before paying off in terms of brain fitness. It constitutes a great and pleasurable mental effort, and helps build cognitive reserve, but it is different by nature from more targeted, efficient, and complementary brain training interventions.

To take an analogy from the world of physical fitness, it makes sense to stay fit by playing pickup soccer games and also by training specific muscle groups and capacities such as cardio endurance, abdominal muscles, and thigh muscle. It is not one or the other.

Under what conditions can brain training work?

This is the million dollar question. Evidence is growing that brain training can work. The question remains, however, how to maximize the likelihood of transfer from training to daily life.

Why do we still often hear that brain training does not work?

Because of the different understandings of what "brain training" and "work" mean. A machine to train abdominal muscles probably won't "work" if what we measure is blood pressure. A "plane" won't fly if it wasn't a plane to start with, but a donkey.The most critical factor in determining whether a brain training method or program works is the extent to which the training effects "transfer" to benefits in daily life. We know from common experience that practice usually triggers improvement in the practiced task.

Based on our analysis of documented examples of brain training techniques that "work" or "transfer," we propose that these five conditions must be met for any kind of brain training, from meditation to technology-based programs, to translate into meaningful real world improvements:

1- It must engage and exercise a core brain-based capacity identified to be relevant to real-life outcomes, such as executive attention, working memory, speed of processing and emotional regulation. Many supposed "brain training" games fail to provide any actual "brain training" because they were never really designed to target specific and relevant brain functions.

2- It must target a performance bottleneck - otherwise it is an exercise in vanity similar to building the largest biceps in town while neglecting the rest of the body. A critical question to ask is: Which brain function do I need to optimize? With physical fitness, effective training begins with a target in mind: Is the goal to train abdominal muscles? Biceps? Cardio capacity? So it goes for brain fitness -the choice of a technique or technology should be driven by your goal.

3- A minimum "dose" of 15 hours total per targeted cognitive ability, performed over 8 weeks or less, is necessary for real improvement. Training only a few hours across a wide variety of brain functions should not be expected to trigger real-world benefits, in the same way that going to the gym a couple times per month and doing an assortment of undirected exercises cannot be expected to result in increased muscle strength and physical fitness.

4- Training must adapt to performance, require effortful attention, and increase in difficulty. This is a key advantage of computerized "brain training" over pen-and-paper-based activities. Think about the number of hours you have spent doing crossword or Sudoku puzzles, or mastering any new subject for that matter, in a way that was either too easy for you and became boring or way too difficult and became frustrating. Interactive training has the capacity to constantly monitor your level of performance and adapt accordingly.

5- Continued practice is required for continued benefits. Just as you wouldn't expect to derive lifelong benefits from running a few hours this month, and then not exercising ever again, you shouldn't expect lifelong benefits from a one-time brain training activity. Remember that "cells that fire together wire together" - while the minimum dose described above may act as a threshold to start seeing some benefits, continued practice, either at a reduced number of hours or as a periodic "booster," is a final condition for transfer to real-world benefits over time.
