Dear Valinda:
I was dating a man for two years when he suddenly married a widower whose husband was killed accidentally during a military war game exercise. She had a little girl named Nolan. For now I will call him Jeff.
Jeff assured me that he didn't love this woman, but he had to marry her because his high-profile boss at work and the Senator from our district was pressuring him to do so.. I never fully understood what was so important about this woman or why Jeff was pushed into marring her. All I knew was that shortly after they got married, Jeff adopted the little girl.
I was with him for two years before this happened. As far as I know, they only dated three or four times before getting engaged. When Jeff told me that he still loved me and needed me, I believed him. I stuck with him, mostly because I was in shock over what transpired in such a short time.
Before this woman came into the picture, Jeff took me everywhere and I was the love of his life. There was no way I wasn't about to just walk away.
The same week Jeff and this woman was married, he gave up his job at the law firm and started working for the Senator directly, as a legal advisor. Jeff is a brilliant attorney.
After the marriage Jeff still visited me often, during working hours and in the evening. I made few demands on him. I was still trying to get the courage to end the relationship.
One evening when he was over, I walked in on him talking softly on the telephone. He was giving someone the address to his young daughter's private school. I recognized the address because the up-scale school was a couple blocks from my mother's estate. I didn't think anything of it.
About a month later, the little girl was kidnapped from school. It was all over the news.
During that time, Jeff changed, he was more serious and angry most of the time. I decided to keep my mouth shut, but that didn't stop my mind from wondering. We went from hot to barely warm in the bedroom. I realized something was terribly wrong in his life. I realized more than ever that he needed me, so I said nothing. He kept paying all my bills, and buying me nice gifts, just like he did before he married.
After a while I grew comfortable with the situation. And soon he was around less and less. He placed a large sum of money in my checking account and after that I barely saw him. I guess it's what I expected, and I'm thankful that he walked me to the door of our relationship, slowly.
The problem is, I think about that little girl almost every day. I know Jeff and the Senator's office had something to do with her disappearance.
What should I do?
