Therapy Resources: Knowing Your Options Can Help You Receive the Best Treatment

Knowing the different therapy resources which are available to you can make a big difference in not only the outcome of your therapy treatment but also the length of time it takes before you are considered to be living in successful recovery from addiction.

Inpatient care is, by all standards, the most effective type of treatment to help an addict successfully negotiate the path to recovery, but there are many other types of treatment and therapy resources available for those who cannot enroll for inpatient care.

Although inpatient care is regarded by professionals to be the most complete, intense, and successful type of addiction treatment program, it may not be suitable in all cases. Some people may find it impossible to be away from their families for a prolonged period of time. Some patients may be managing to hold down employment which would be compromised if they were suddenly enrolled in an inpatient addiction program. Others cannot leave their children for prolonged periods of time, and some people simply cannot afford the extra costs involved with inpatient care.

Fortunately, many other therapy resources can be utilized to help patients who are dedicated to walking a road to recovery. The majority of these treatments are included in residential care programs, but can also be accessed from other types of treatment programs. The most successful (and essential) therapy resources available in outpatient treatment and other types of programs include:

· Individual therapy. The best addiction treatment centers will have a team of specialist therapists for each of the different types of addiction. Although many types of addiction have the same or similar root problems, there are also therapists who specialize in sex addiction therapy or trauma resolution therapy for example. Make sure that the therapists at your chosen treatment center are qualified to deal with the type of addiction problems you have.

· Family therapy. This is an extremely imperative, fundamental type of resource, and one of the most important therapy resources for a successful outcome to addiction treatment. The amount of suffering a family is subjected to due to addiction must never be underestimated, and very often the individual family members will need to be involved in therapy sessions (sometimes individually) in order to really understand the reasons for addiction and how to cope with their own feelings of inadequacy or rejection. It is also important that patients understand the effect that their own actions are having on their loved ones and how important it is for them to tackle the problems together. A strong supportive family network is vital for the person suffering with addiction to live a successful life in recovery and to avoid relapse in the future.

· Family skill building. The skills needed in order to fight addiction problems can be learned, and this is a valuable therapy resource which can make a real difference to the outcome of any addiction treatment program. Families, as well as patients, must learn about the triggers which may cause relapse in the future, how to avoid situations which may be harmful for the future recovery, and how to recognize the danger signs when the patient is most likely to return to their old, harmful ways. If the family can learn how to build a whole new life together then everyone can be healthy and happy.

· Couples therapy. Akin to marriage counseling with added difficulties, addiction problems can really drive a wedge between couples which must be broken down from both sides of the equation in order for their relationship to survive. Partners of those suffering from addiction can often feel neglected or rejected, like they could have done something to prevent the addiction in the first place, or just completely let down by the person they loved the most and chose to spend the rest of their lives with. There are some serious bridges to be built in many of these relationships and, fortunately, many of the best addiction clinics or centers have the necessary therapy resources in place to deal with these problems. If this is a particular problem for you and your partner, then watch out for this option when choosing the best addiction treatment center for your purposes.

· Psychologists and Psychological Testing. Many people who suffer from addiction have co-occurring disorders which must be dealt with in tandem with the physical sides of their addiction. A surprising number of patients have mental health problems, or suffer from depression or similar disorders. In order for these people to live a life in successful recovery these problems must be addressed at their source and dealt with accordingly. If the addiction was the symptom of these problems, then it is equally important to deal with the cause.

· Support groups. Another incredibly important part of therapy resources which can really help recovering patients to live a life in successful recovery are support groups. Many people find great comfort and help from regular support groups and in speaking with people who are facing the same problems they face, going through the same thoughts, feelings, and anxieties. These can be an invaluable resource for many people who can attend these groups for many months or even years after they have undergone more intensive addiction therapy. Helping others to battle their demons can be very cathartic for those who are successfully living a life of recovery.

· Therapy resources which teach new skills. This can also be an extremely valuable asset for anyone who is battling to beat addiction problems. Learning something new can be a fabulous release for those people who can focus their attentions on new skills, hobbies, and pastimes, as well as meeting new people with similar interests. These types of therapy resources include music therapy, painting therapy, animal therapy, including the relatively simple procedure of having a pet to care for. Walking a dog can be extremely therapeutic. Other types of successful therapy include horse riding and similar activities.

While there is no doubt that intensive residential treatment programs offer the quickest route to recovery, as you can see, there as many other options available for those who, for whatever reason, cannot take part in residential treatment. If you or someone you know suffers from addiction, start researching thetherapy resources available to you and get headed down a path to a life of recovery.
